Key takeaways

  • Two models, and separating them is the point. Hawk is the pure recurrent model — gated linear recurrences, no attention — and it already exceeds Mamba’s reported downstream performance. Griffin adds local attention to the same recurrences. So the paper reports what the recurrence buys on its own and what mixing buys on top, rather than presenting one hybrid and leaving the attribution open.
  • Griffin matches Llama-2 on over 6× fewer tokens, which is the headline and is a token-efficiency claim rather than a compute-efficiency one.
  • The attention is local, not global. This is the variant of the hybrid where the softmax layers see a window rather than the whole sequence — a different bargain from the one SOTA-132 records, where a minority of layers keep global attention. Both restore what linear attention lacks; only one keeps exact long-range retrieval.
  • Griffin extrapolates to sequences significantly longer than it was trained on. Training matches Transformer hardware efficiency; inference has lower latency and significantly higher throughput. Scaled to 14B parameters with the sharding strategy described.

Standing in the anthology

The earliest member of the hybrid family in this record, and one of the multiply-cited absences from #40 — Falcon-H1 (LIT-120) and Kimi K3 (LIT-131) both cite it.

It is where the interleaving pattern SOTA-132 recommends actually starts. The delta-rule paper says so explicitly: its sliding-window hybrid “follows Griffin and Samba”. So the line runs Griffin (2024, local attention) → DeltaNet’s two hybrids (2024, local and global variants) → Kimi Linear’s 3:1 global layout (2025) → the 2026 production models — and the record previously held only the last two steps.

The distinction the note keeps is between local and global attention in the minority layers. Griffin and Samba take the local branch; the layouts this record recommends take the global one. That is a real fork, not a detail: only global attention preserves exact retrieval at arbitrary distance, which is the property SOTA-132 says the minority layers are there to protect.

No practice of its own, and it is now named in the one it started. SOTA-132’s Sequence begins here rather than two steps later, with the local-versus-global fork stated: Griffin puts local attention in the minority layers and the practice puts global attention there, which is the difference between preserving exact retrieval at arbitrary distance and not. Filing the local variant separately would offer a reader a recommendation the record believes is worse, on the origin’s authority.
