Bernstein and Newhouse (2024) — ARXIV-2410.21265

Key takeaways

  • The framing is a type error. “Since the gradient is a dual vector it may not be subtracted from the weights without first being mapped to the primal space where the weights reside.” Ordinary gradient descent does exactly that subtraction, and the paper takes the objection seriously rather than rhetorically
  • Modular dualization, in three steps: assign an operator norm to each layer from its input-output semantics, build the layerwise duality map from that norm, then recursively induce a map on the whole architecture
  • muP and Shampoo are the same thing, approximated twice. Section 4.1 shows both “emerge as partial approximations to a single duality map induced by the RMS–RMS operator norm” — one aimed at scalable training, the other at fast training, and the paper’s own words are “important and seemingly disparate”
  • The Linear and Conv2D maps are a rectangular Newton-Schulz iteration, GPU-friendly, citing Kovarik (1970) and Björck & Bowie (1971)
  • “A variant of our methods was used to set speed records for training NanoGPT” — which is the sentence that connects this paper to the record’s entire Muon cluster

Standing in the anthology

The account under ten practices that had none. SOTA-121, SOTA-131, SOTA-120, SOTA-122, SOTA-165, SOTA-168, SOTA-192, SOTA-221, SOTA-001 and SOTA-003 all mention Muon; LIT-159 is the origin and is a blog post, filed with a url: and described in its own standing as “the clearest case yet for ADR-009 — three laboratories pretrain frontier models with this and there is no paper to cite.”

This is the paper. Orthogonalising the update via Newton-Schulz is not a trick that happened to work; it is the duality map for the spectral norm, and THEORY-024 is that account.

The norm being dualized is LIT-436’s. That paper defined the modular norm recursively alongside the architecture and showed that normalising any base optimizer’s updates in it makes the learning rate transfer across width and depth. This paper keeps the recursive construction and changes what is done with it: rather than rescaling an update a base optimizer has already produced, it builds the duality map from the same per-layer norms and sends the gradient through it, which for a Linear layer is the Newton-Schulz orthogonalisation.

How it was found is worth recording. Not by the record complaining about an absence — nothing here mentions modular duality, the modular norm, or the spectral condition. It came from #180, the reading feed, where this paper and its two predecessors sit at 8 distinct days and 14 sessions each, near the top of 4,076 papers. DP-007 says agreement has no author and therefore no arrival event; here the arrival event came from outside the record entirely.
