Standing

It fills a hole between two things the record already holds. SOTA-184 adapts a model by training a low-rank update, which is cheap and is not full-parameter training; SOTA-155 spreads training across poorly connected workers, which assumes you have the workers. Neither answers “I want every parameter trained and I have one small GPU”, and that is the question this takes.

Its headline number mixes two things and the body separates them. The abstract’s 2.6% on RTX 4090 includes the 4090’s hourly price being about a quarter of an A100’s, so it is an economic claim about hardware as much as an efficiency claim about the method. The same-device figure — 33% on A100/A800 — is the one that isolates the method, and even that is largely “one GPU instead of two”.

The evidence and the claim sit at different scales. Quality is compared at ResNet, GPT-2 0.15B and 2B; the 7B appears only in the cost experiments, and sizes beyond 7B are explicitly estimated from single-round speeds rather than measured.
