Key takeaways

  • For a centered Gaussian process on a finite index set, the expected softmax-weighted average g(β) = E[Σ X_t e^{βX_t}/Z] is bounded above by √(2σ²·E D(ν_β‖ν₀)) at every temperature (Thm 1), and below by a Sudakov-type bound at low temperature (Thm 2, above a threshold β* the paper proves exists but never computes).
  • For i.i.d. N(0,σ²) logits there is an exact identity, g(β) = βσ²(1 − E‖ν_β‖²₂) (Lemma 2): the expected softmax-weighted logit is the score scale times one minus the expected collision probability.
  • The random-energy-model section it restates implies that softmax over random scores stays spread out unless inverse temperature times score scale grows like √(2 ln n).

Standing in the record

A probability paper, filed here at the owner’s request after a close reading in the catchall record, nucleation, where it was held first. It carries no ML claim and no instruction: “attention” does not appear in it. What it gives this record is exact Gaussian-score relations between softmax sharpness, entropy and score scale — the Gaussian counterpart of the dispersion argument of THEORY-098, and a neighbour of THEORY-061’s entropy bound. It should be cited as supporting mathematics for an account of softmax temperature against sequence length, not as evidence that such a temperature schedule works. Theorem 3’s stated constant is stronger than its proof, which gives only cσ/√2 (see the NOTE).
