The case
U1 asked for the Hofstadter podcast; A2 found Radiolab’s “100 Flowers” (2014) and Le Ton beau de Marot (LIT-766). The poem’s constraints, as A2 gives them: “28 lines, three syllables per line, rhyming couplets, a light and playful tone, the poet’s name embedded in the middle, and the opening line echoed at the end.” Its semantic content is “almost trivial”. Hofstadter “sent the poem to dozens of people and collected radically different translations”.
Two of its renderings are cases of their own: CASE-019 and CASE-011.
What it can show
That several preservation targets compete, so that no single rendering is the translation. The manuscript §1: “meter, sound, playfulness, intelligibility, and context are different preservation targets”. The details come from the assistant’s reading of the episode transcript (A2, A4), and LIT-766 is unread here, so the case stands on a report.
Note of 2026-10-10: the replies
A candidate for the necessity half of CLAIM-061 (CLAIM-229): renderings that keep the address and tone while changing what is said. It stands on a report until LIT-766 is read.
Note of 2026-10-10: a documented case
The search of 2026-10-10 that the owner asked for checked this case as the candidate for CLAIM-061’s necessity half, and finds that it does not fill that role. The renderings it could reach, French’s “Fairest Friend”, “Hi Toots!” and Hofstadter’s prose versions, keep almost all of Marot’s propositions: the greeting, the room as a prison, the order to recover and go out, the warning about sweets, the blessing. What varies is form, register, persona and tone. These are changes of words, not of propositions. That is this case’s existing use for CLAIM-115: competing preservation targets. It is not A without P (CLAIM-229). Reading LIT-766 could change this only if some rendering there changes what the poem says and Hofstadter judges that the get-well address survives. The search found no report that one does.
The necessity role passes to CASE-056, Phillips’s handshake for the “holy kiss”, which changes what is directed and was judged by Nida to keep the greeting. That case supplies documentation. It does not supply reader evidence, which this case lacks too.
