Context

ADR-031 considered a translation word and set it aside. Gutt (LIT-784) and Hofstadter (LIT-766) were then its only works, both unread, and the record’s habit is to wait for a second instance. On 2026-10-09 the owner asked for the 46 works dropped from the manuscript’s bibliography to be registered. They include five works of translation theory:

  • Jakobson’s “On Linguistic Aspects of Translation”;
  • Nida’s Toward a Science of Translating;
  • House’s model of translation quality assessment;
  • Hatim and Mason’s Discourse and the Translator;
  • Nord’s Translating as a Purposeful Activity.

The manuscript What Survives Translation? is itself about what a translation preserves. linguistics covers “the study of language itself”, and translation theory is adjacent to that rather than inside it.

Decision

Add translation (Translation): translation and its theory. It covers:

  • equivalence and its kinds (formal, dynamic, functional);
  • interpretive resemblance;
  • register and quality assessment;
  • translation as skopos-driven action;
  • intersemiotic translation between media;
  • what a translation preserves or changes.

The works of translation theory take it first. Gutt and Hofstadter are retagged with it first. Claims about translation in the argument schemes may use it.

Alternatives

  • linguistics alone. It is the nearest word, and that is the problem the closed vocabulary exists to prevent.
  • philosophy-of-language. That word fits Gutt’s relevance-theoretic account and Jakobson’s semiotics, but not quality assessment or skopos theory, which are applied and professional.
