Key takeaways

  • Adding a time delay to random generalized Lotka–Volterra communities pushes a feasible, stable equilibrium through an analytically computable critical delay into an oscillatory, non-point-attractor phase. Measured as the inverse coefficient of variation of total abundance in that phase, community stability rises with diversity, which is the opposite sign to May’s local-stability result.

Seeded from the abstract and a skim, before the reading in NOTE-061. What follows is what the work says about itself.

May (1972) and later random-matrix work found universal patterns of feasibility and stability in large random ecosystems, but few studies have added delay. The authors study generalized Lotka–Volterra dynamics with instantaneous and delayed random interactions. Without delay, they find a simple analytical relation between feasibility and stability when intraspecific interactions dominate. Increasing the delay produces a transition from an equilibrium phase to a stable oscillatory phase, and the critical delay is computed analytically and matches simulations. With a stability measure suited to non-equilibrium dynamics, stability increases with diversity in the delay-induced oscillatory regime.

Standing in the record

Filed from the survey of 2026-09-25 of work the anthology set aside as out of scope (tier C): 300 seconds of active reading over 1 session in the papers-feed tracker. It was filed Deferred, unread. NOTE-061 is the close reading of 2026-09-25, and it placed the work: Proposed — A modest, partly numerical preprint whose critical-delay formula is the standard linear delay result applied to a random community matrix. Its diversity–stability claim would be settled by comparing CV_c(S) against the √S averaging expected from weakly correlated oscillators (the “statistical inevitability” null of Tilman et al. 1998, which the paper cites as ref. 40), and by resolving whether the “divergent” phase is numerical or real.

When seeded, before the reading in NOTE-061, the entry gave a priority for a deeper reading: low — a single 300 s session and “file later” triage. It is a specialised theoretical-ecology result that the skim captures adequately.

What the seeding asked a deeper reading to check (NOTE-061 is that reading):

  • It adds to the May complexity–stability debate: the diversity–stability sign depends on which stability notion is used (local asymptotic versus variability).
  • Random-matrix stability with delays is also relevant to delayed-feedback dynamics in coupled learners, but the paper makes no such link.
  • Check the published version against the preprint (figures and analysis may have been revised) and the “diverging phase” caveat.

The skim is of the arXiv v1 preprint (2110.11914, submitted 22 Oct 2021, same title, 18 pp.): abstract, introduction, theoretical framework, results figures and discussion/conclusion. The published version may differ from the preprint.
