Key takeaways

Read in full (NOTE-729).

  • A ladder of autonomy. Energy-well stability needs no exchange; far-from-equilibrium stability does. Above a pumped chemical bath come self-maintenance (a candle flame), energy-directing infrastructure with no alternatives, and recursive self-maintenance (a bacterium that swims up a sugar gradient and tumbles going down it).
  • Function is contribution to one’s own persistence, always relative to the system served: a parasite’s gut is functional for the parasite and dysfunctional for the host. The norm comes from the thermodynamic asymmetry between far-from-equilibrium and equilibrium processes. A flame has functions in this sense.
  • Having a function is being of a type the whole’s processes presuppose to meet a condition, whether or not it does. This is what grounds malfunction, and it is sketched and deferred to Christensen & Bickhard.
  • Etiological function is epiphenomenal, since a molecular duplicate with no history would lack it, and only current state is efficacious.
  • Representation is the indication that a further interaction will succeed. Differentiations have no content. The indication implicitly predicates its conditions of success, can be false, and can be found false by the system. Information semantics, Fodor and Dretske are argued to make such error impossible.

Why this is here

A11 named it as a foundational interlocutor for the difference between genuine autonomy and generic self-organizing dynamics. The filing’s summary was right in outline. It did not say that the line Bickhard draws for function falls below the flame, so self-maintenance alone, which the exchange took to be generic self-organization, already has norms on this account. What separates the autonomy that matters for cognition is recursive self-maintenance, and with it error the system can detect.

What the reading found:

  • CLAIM-288. Its premise is supported by a second route. Function is relative to the system whose persistence is served, and a function that exists only in an observer’s ascription is not natural. A modeller’s reward is no operator’s persistence condition. The application to simulations is the record’s.
  • CLAIM-284. Vocabulary, not evidence. Recursive self-maintenance is governing among regimes; transforming the governing organization does not appear, nor do selves or authority.
  • QUESTION-087. A partial answer: an authority structure can be functional for itself and dysfunctional for the organization, judged by the organization’s own persistence conditions. Persistence is the only standard, so captured authority that keeps the organization alive is not dysfunctional. That is CLAIM-075’s limit, which the paper does not dispute.
  • THEORY-072. A disagreement about whether a flame’s contributions are functions, not about the organism line. Mossio, Saborido & Moreno deny the flame functions; Bickhard grants it serving-a-function.
  • THEORY-071 and LIT-1017. The same bacterium; self-maintenance against recursive self-maintenance is close to Di Paolo’s robustness against adaptivity, five years earlier. Bickhard has no individuality condition.

THEORY-220 records the account as Proposed.
