Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-985 (Read).
- Exact identity. D_t(x, y)² = Σ_{l≥1} λ_l^{2t}(ψ_l(x) − ψ_l(y))², with ψ_l = φ_l/√π the right eigenvectors. Equivalently, it is a combination of 2t-step transition probabilities.
- Scale. t counts steps and acts as a scale. Coordinates drop out as |λ_l/λ₁|^t falls below δ, so the truncated maps form a refinement chain in t, ordered by eigenvalue modulus (THEORY-745). The kernel width ε is a second scale. In the manifold limit, t steps are heat time tε.
- Truncation. The paper claims “relative accuracy δ”. The true bound is absolute: δ²|λ₁|^{2t}(1/π(x) + 1/π(y)).
- α-family (Theorem 2, proved). The limit is Δ(fq^{1−α})/q^{1−α} − (Δq^{1−α}/q^{1−α})f, which is Δf + 2(1 − α)⟨∇U, ∇f⟩ with q = e^{−U} (THEORY-744). α = 1 recovers the Neumann heat kernel, independent of density, though the proof’s semigroup step has a gap.
- No gap. The paper never uses a spectral gap. Clusters merging as t grows (Fig. 1) are illustrated, not proved.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-19 for QUESTION-217 and read in full on 2026-10-20. It is the proof-carrying companion of LIT-981 (NOTE-784, Skimmed). It confirms that note’s α-family, and settles that “backward” (LIT-981) and “forward” Fokker–Planck (here) name one operator and its conjugate. For the question it gives the exactly commuting case: refinement and acquisition by the same operator coincide because both are read from one eigenbasis. It gives no condition for agreement with an externally given hierarchy or with relevance. The anthology does not hold it (checked 2026-10-19).
Why this is here
A2 listed it as a contrastive reading in which scale emerges from powers of a Markov operator rather than from an imposed partition. Bears on QUESTION-217. NOTE-675 cites it without a LIT.
