Key takeaways
- A Hutchinsonian niche can be scaled down to single organisms if it is defined as the environmental conditions under which a particular individual has an expected lifetime reproductive success of at least one. Doing so forces a split between realized and potential niches, a choice among time-slice, prospective and trajectory views, and extra intraspecific dimensions.
Seeded from the abstract and a skim, before the reading in NOTE-170. What follows is what the work says about itself.
The authors build an individual-level analogue of Hutchinson’s population-level ecological niche. The individualized niche is the range of environmental conditions under which a given individual’s expected lifetime reproductive success is at least one. It is chiefly an ecological concept of phenotype–environment match (“niche fit”), and fitness enters as the measure of that fit, not as a driver of selection. They work through four problems that arise when niches are scaled from populations to individuals: individuals are unique and so unreplicated; individual niches change over time; the space has more dimensions because conspecifics become niche axes; and the boundaries are set by expected (not realized) reproductive success, inferred by marginalizing fitness functions. The frame is the behavioural-ecology literature on consistent individual differences (“animal personality”).
Standing in the record
Filed from the 2026-09-26 sweep of the papers-feed tracker for philosophy: 20 seconds of active reading over 1 session. It was filed Deferred, unread. NOTE-170 is the close reading of 2026-09-26, and it placed the work: Active — worth reading as the clearest structuring of the “individualized niche” vocabulary, and as the individual-level complement to Trappes (LIT-169); it is a behavioural-ecology position essay, and its own admission that the potential niche is unobservable and estimable only from population-level marginalization limits it to a framework rather than a measurement result.
When seeded, before the reading in NOTE-170, the entry gave a priority for a deeper reading: low — t=20 s, and the skim captures the four-challenge structure. Most useful as a companion to LIT-169.
What the seeding asked a deeper reading to check (NOTE-170 is that reading):
- It is the natural companion to LIT-169 (Trappes): individualized and potential niches are exactly the ones Trappes excludes from the NCT evolutionary niche. A nucleation note could treat the two together as a small cluster on niche concepts.
- Check how the counterfactual “potential niche” is meant to be estimated. The paper concedes it is unobservable, and the adequacy of the marginalization move (Fig. 7) is the philosophically interesting bit.
- It is more ecology-methodology than philosophy. A reader should decide whether the conceptual contribution (unit and level of a theoretical concept) earns it a note of its own or a line in a niche-concept cluster.
