Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-1156. Page numbers are arXiv v4’s.
- The chain. One finite population per player slot. Imitation is Fermi with intensity α and mutation is vanishingly rare, so the chain runs over pure strategy profiles, with transitions the fixation probabilities of a single mutant. Its stationary distribution is unique at every finite α (Theorem 2.1.2), and the ranking is the order of its masses.
- The limit. As α → ∞ the transitions become those of Markov-Conley chains on the sink strongly connected components of the weakly better-response graph (Theorem 2.5.1). For the replicator flow, every asymptotically stable sink chain component contains one, and each lies in one chain component (Theorem 2.4.24; THEORY-942). “every game is a “potential” game, if only we change our solution concept from equilibria to chain recurrent sets” (p. 13).
- What it leaves open. The infinite-α chain is reducible when there are several sinks, as the authors say (p. 15). α-Rank uses a large finite α found by a sweep, and no result says what its stationary distribution tends to, or how it divides mass among sinks.
- What it is not. Not invariant to copies. In rock-paper-scissors with scissors duplicated, the single-population ranking moves from a three-way tie to rock first (0.4, 0.2, 0.2, 0.2), at each α tried from 0.1 to 50 (NOTE-1156, checked by script).
- Applications. AlphaGo’s seven variants: all mass on AG(rvp). AlphaZero: 56 snapshots, the last on top with 0.39, with a mid-training snapshot ranked fifth. MuJoCo soccer: 6 of 10 agents survive, among many cycles. Kuhn poker with 3 and 4 players. Leduc poker’s PSRO meta-game.
Why this is here
Filed 2026-10-24 for the record’s cycles and governance lines. Its
Conley reading, a potential always exists once each recurrent class is
collapsed to a point, is the dynamical form of a question TERM-077 and
CLAIM-451 leave open: what order there is when wins cycle. Its chain
is the finite-population replicator that CASE-155 and CLAIM-444
read as authority (NOTE-1156). It carries anthology-candidate
because it is a method for evaluating ML agents. It is filed for
understanding, not as an instruction for practice.
