Key takeaways
- A joint coupling makes the pairwise alignments jointly realizable by construction; for deterministic couplings that means they compose, for soft ones it does not (THEORY-1132).
- The joint optimum exceeds the sum of pairwise optima exactly when the best pairwise alignments conflict; the paper names the gap and never measures it.
- Its accuracy gains (THEORY-1159) are on benchmarks whose truth is transitive, and are not separated from its new cost and clustering.
Why this is here
A6’s bridge back to holonomy: independently fitted pairwise alignments need not compose consistently, and a joint alignment imposes consistency by construction. Comparing the two on held-out data asks whether global consistency is a useful regularizer or a loss of local distinctions (CLAIM-496, QUESTION-319).
The reading qualifies this. “By construction” holds for joint realizability, and for composition only when couplings are deterministic. The paper does compare joint and pairwise methods on held-out node sets, but its ground truth is consistent by construction, so its benchmarks cannot show a loss of local distinctions; the comparison A6 wanted is not in it (NOTE-1334).
