Earman (2008), Erkenntnis 69(3):377–414 (November 2008 issue; online 27 September 2008, per Crossref); Crossref-verified. published: is the online-first date, the earliest dated appearance found; an undated circulating draft exists but was not used. — DOI-10.1007/s10670-008-9124-z
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-09-29 as a supplemental reading. The close readings of the owner’s prior-art novelty map’s
references found the map’s citation for this point wrong, or its source unreachable, and this work is the
candidate replacement. published: is the first appearance (ADR-002).
A close reading was attempted on 2026-09-29. No legitimate full text could be reached: I checked the private converted-text cache first: there is no file and no manifest entry. OpenAlex lists DOI 10.1007/s10670-008-9124-z as closed (“any_repository_has_fulltext”: false). Its second location is a D-Scholarship@Pitt record (item 13213) whose only attached file OpenAlex lists as “licence.txt”. That record now returns 404 over http, over https and under the /id/eprint/ path, because the repository has been migrated. The Wayback availability API has no snapshot of it, and web.archive.org reset the connection. The article is not among the 29 Earman items in PhilSci-Archive’s author listing, which I checked in full. PhilArchive (EARSRF-2) sits behind a bot challenge (403). SpringerLink offers the article only for purchase or subscription (“Buy article”). Semantic Scholar’s API was rate-limited (429). Its two records, found by web search, are the Erkenntnis version and a “Draft: Not for Citation” PDF. Web search found that draft hosted at jamesowenweatherall.com/SCPPRG/, the reading-list folder of the Southern California Philosophy of Physics Reading Group. That is a reading-group repost of an author’s draft marked “not for citation” on a third party’s site, so it is an unauthorised third-party upload under the brief’s rules and was not used. I did not query Unpaywall, because it requires an email address. No author-hosted or repository full text was found. The item should be registered as Deferred until a copy is supplied. It stays Unavailable until a copy is supplied, not on merit.
