Key takeaways

From the reading of 2026-10-10 (NOTE-695).

  • A third structural realism. The paper calls it “a moderate version of metaphysical structural realism”, set against both Worrall’s epistemic structural realism and French and Ladyman’s radical ontic one. It keeps the first premise of the “master argument” for intrinsic properties, “Relations require relata”, and denies the second, that relata “necessarily have intrinsic properties over and above the relations” (p. 31).
  • No priority either way. “An object as such is nothing but that what bears the relations” (p. 32). Objects and relations are mutually dependent, for existence and for conception.
  • Relata that nothing discerns. Concrete relations give identity conditions wherever intrinsic properties could. Where they cannot, the paper accepts “a numerical distinction (diversity)” as primitive. Its cases are entangled quantum systems of one kind and space-time points in symmetric space-times. This “is not a primitive thisness, for it does not establish an identity in time—or any other sort of an identity” (p. 33).
  • Applied to space-time. The relata are “space-time points (not bare manifold points!)”. The metric gives them a “structural identity” (p. 37), and so, in the fibre-bundle formulation, does a section of the orthonormal frame bundle (pp. 40–41). The hole argument counts against epistemic structural realism, and “what does a space-time relation … relate?” counts against the radical version (pp. 35–36).

Standing in the record

Registered on 2026-10-10 because two new claims cite it. It was read in full the same day.

  • The owner’s individuation thesis (CLAIM-136) was placed by A194 “close to the non-eliminative OSR developed by Esfeld and Lam”. A191 §2 modelled its “moderate communicative structural realism” on it, and A218 calls it “The closest established metaphysical relative”. The reading finds that the paper holds the claim’s weak version (numerical plurality without differentiation), not its strict one.
  • The objection to that thesis (CLAIM-134) rests on Chakravartty’s dilemma (THEORY-034). NOTE-149 records that Chakravartty’s fn. 9 names Esfeld and Esfeld & Lam among the no-priority views, and that his §10.6 asks of their “an object as such is nothing but what bears the relations” what the “what” is. The paper takes the dilemma’s no-intrinsic horn. Its answer to the “what” is a bearer whose plurality is primitive. THEORY-034’s census found only Floridi on that horn; since its version 2 (2026-10-16) it names this paper as the second.

The record also discusses the position through the Stanford survey’s thesis 4, Esfeld’s “moderate structural realism” (NOTE-038), and through Morganti’s objections to it (NOTE-095), which cite Esfeld & Lam’s later drift toward a substance ontology. That drift is in their 2011 paper, not this one.

NOTE-695 is the close reading of 2026-10-10, and it placed the work: Active. It is worth reading as the founding statement of the no-priority, non-eliminative structural realism that Chakravartty’s dilemma targets, and for what it does with relata no relation discerns. The GR sections show fit, not entailment.
