The question
CLAIM-021 grants that the mechanisms composing a will-organization are not novel. CLAIM-024 presses the counter that the existing fields already study every one of them. A lower-level account can stand in two relations to a higher-level one. It can implement it, saying how the stated functions are done. Or it can replace it, making the higher-level construct redundant, as mean kinetic energy did for temperature. The question is which relation holds here, and how to tell.
Why the record needs it
The will paper’s own standard is that a concept with no explanatory gain “should not be retained merely as a new label” (CLAIM-024). If the mechanism literatures replace the account, CLAIM-024 wins. If they implement it, CLAIM-021’s concession costs nothing, and the gain lies where CLAIM-122 places it: in the conditions of efficacy. The transfer is not an analogy. Kendler’s relation concerns psychological functions realized in agents, which is the target here. CLAIM-174 already supplies a quantitative criterion of the right kind. An agent-level description is kept when it beats a lower-level one by more than its Occam cost.
What the record holds
- THEORY-048: lower-level findings “implement psychological functions rather than replacing them”. Function is stated first, and the mechanism is how it gets done. The account is refuted for a domain if the lower-level account “makes the psychological description idle”. Limit: argued from perception and memory, not from psychiatric cases, and the step to all of psychiatry “is asserted”. It is about explanation, not about distinct causes.
What would answer it
The comparison CLAIM-024 says is undone. Take a case such as Northstar, model it with control and metacontrol mechanisms alone, then with a will-organization over them, and price the difference as CLAIM-174 does. Replacement is shown if the mechanism model predicts as well with no will-organization variables.
Note of 2026-10-13: the owner’s question for the operator model
At U5 of the 2026-10-13 exchange the owner asked this question of a different model: “a standalone question is just: ‘do we gain something just by framing a “self” this way?’” The model was a self as a population of processes that allocate authority to one another. A5 split it into an explanatory question and a constitutive one, and proposed explanatory compression as the test: whether one set of organizational variables (persistence, responsiveness, diversity, concentration and transport of influence) predicts habit, rumination, rigidity and insight better than phenomenon-specific models (A7’s H8). The same objection applies there as here (CLAIM-024): every mechanism named has its own literature. A7 §14 granted it: “A sufficiently flexible operator framework could redescribe almost any dynamical process.” Workbench entry of 2026-10-13, 21:29.
