Why it is a question

The owner, at U30: “apply this framework to discuss the possibility of meaningful affective states attributable to a deep neural network specifically during training”. The framework was the regulatory distress of U28–U29. Training, not inference: the question is about the process that changes the network.

A30’s verdict: “a meaningful, qualified notion of training-time affective organization—but it does not currently support the conclusion that a neural network feels distress, suffers, or experiences anything during training.” Its ladder: “one loss ⇏ one integrated representation ⇏ one affective state ⇏ one experiencer”. Gradient conflict, g_iᵀg_j < 0, is “a possible ingredient of functional distress, not distress itself”. A negative inner product is itself only a coordinate-dependent indicator, not a finding of frustration (CLAIM-366).

The question has three halves, and the record holds them in different places.

  • Which unit. U31’s correction, granted by A31: individuate first. For conventional training, CLAIM-367 answers in part: most of the governance of updates belongs to the optimizer–model–data system, so a condition of training is not thereby the network’s. It does not say which condition would be affect-like, so it is not written as an answer. CASE-113 holds the design that would locate it.
  • Which condition. A30 put it in “persistent, system-wide conflicts among consequential learning and maintenance demands” rather than “the magnitude of its loss”. U33 moved the primitive from distress to frustration, “a failure of joint realizability” (CLAIM-368), and A33 showed that a zero aggregate gradient can hide it (CLAIM-351). A31 adds the condition a demand must meet: “frustration normally presupposes a relevant demand or commitment belonging to the affected system”. In conventional training the demands are the trainer’s (CLAIM-288).
  • Whether it is felt. That is QUESTION-059, Deferred with its line, and, for systems without biology, QUESTION-048. QUESTION-046 asks for the criterion of a subject that would apply the same way to a network as to a group. A30: “Illusionism doesn’t make any negatively evaluated feedback loop a suffering subject.”

What would count as an answer

For the unit: the crossed interventions of CASE-113, run, with the condition moving or staying when the optimizer is changed and the network held fixed. For the condition: a training-time state that meets A30’s caution, “If z_t is merely a metric computed by an external experimenter, it does not establish internally organized affect”, by being computed and used inside the learner, and whose ablation changes how conflicting demands are resolved. The felt half is not answered by either.
