Why it is a question
THEORY-419 takes the do-operator as Pearl defines it in §5.3.3 (pp. 157–158) and the Epilogue (pp. 417, 421) of the second edition of Causality: a surgery that deletes X’s own equation, sets X to x and solves the rest, while observing X = x is ordinary conditioning. Its two consequences are re-derived. NOTE-696 read only four excerpts the author posts, 46 of some 480 pages. Whether the book keeps that definition, and under what conditions, where the excerpts are silent is not something the record can say. Until 2026-10-20 this was THEORY-419’s promote_when.
What would answer it
A reading of the chapters that define and use the operator: chapter 3 on the do-calculus and identification, chapter 7 on structural counterfactuals, and §§11.4.3–11.4.7 on whether do(x) is universal. It should confirm, or show otherwise, that surgery on autonomous equations is the book’s definition of intervention throughout, and state the conditions the book puts on it.
What would not answer it: more citations of the do-calculus, since the question is what the book says, not whether the calculus is used.
