Why it is a question

THEORY-296 holds what COGITATE measured: no sustained content-specific synchronization between category-selective cortex and early visual cortex. The preregistered phase coupling was brief, low-frequency and mostly evoked, and exploratory amplitude coupling was also brief. With only 12 V1/V2 electrodes in the iEEG, whether the null reflects the brain or the sampling is open.

What would answer it

A recording with dense sampling of V1/V2 and of category-selective cortex in the same subjects, during clearly seen images held for over a second, that tests content-specific phase or amplitude coupling in the gamma band over the whole stimulus with the evoked response removed. The null is borne out if such coupling is again brief or absent at a sensitivity that detects it elsewhere, and overturned if it is sustained for the duration of the image. Results from other metrics or bands, or from coupling with prefrontal cortex, cannot settle it.
