A73 gave four levels, surface realization, conceptual structure, pragmatic operation and communicative configuration, factored as z(u, c) = (z_lex, z_concept, z_act, z_social). The highest is a relational configuration Z(u, c) = (V, E, α): “who stands in what relation to whom, concerning what, and through which communicative action”. Its own caveat: “conceptual rather than a claim about a literal hierarchy of neural representations”.
Why it was replaced
U28: “of course, this isn’t a strict hierarchy. it’s more like a hierarchy of levels at which observables exist” (TERM-009). Levels stopped being layers of an object.
