Definition
An inquiry is a process that pursues a question. It is written as a tuple (Ξ£, A, π, π, π, π):
- Ξ£, the language: what the question can be posed in.
- A, the answer space: which differences would count as an answer. A question q: Ξ© β A partitions states into those it cannot tell apart.
- π, the admissible interventions.
- π, the observations: together with π, the operations that make the differences A asks about accessible.
- π, the criteria of evaluation: what makes one candidate answer better than another.
- π, the resources: time, computation, records and tools, spent on formulating as well as on answering.
The tuple is A15βs (A, π, π, π) of the exchange of 2026-10-27, with the language and the resource bounds that A16 added. Neither called it a standard definition, and it is filed as the recordβs own construct.
An inquiry is reflexive when one of its own components becomes what it is pursuing. Revising A is the case CLAIM-470 turns on. A16 Β§4 gives an example: a question about which equilibrium a system occupies must become a question about which attracting set organizes the dynamics, once a Hopf bifurcation leaves a stable limit cycle. Revising π is A16 Β§2βs βEvaluate or revise ββ.
The distinctions it draws
- From a question. A question fixes A and leaves π, π, π and π open. βIs this system stable?β is a question. It becomes an inquiry once it says which perturbations, which stability, which horizon, how they are observed, and what it may spend.
- From the regime (TERM-065). The effective-description regime β fixes the conditions a description is judged under, and plays the role of π together with a fixed query family. An inquiry carries β and may revise it. TERM-065 takes β as supplied.
- From the frontier (TERM-092). The inquiry frontier is the set of questions an agent can make into inquiries within its π. This term is what each member of that set becomes.
- From specification. That an inquiry stands to its findings as a specification stands to its realizations is CLAIM-470βs thesis. It is stated in this term and is not part of the definition. A reader who rejects the thesis can still use the term.
Why it is proposed
On 2026-10-27 the owner called inquiry a building block of the formal argument. CLAIM-470βs title and proof use it, and so do CLAIM-475βs resource-bounded specifying, TERM-092 and TERM-088βs descriptive sense (βan inquiry can distinguish and track itβ). Without a definition, each uses its own tuple.
