Bo, Kraynak, Kwon, Sun, Gianaros & Wager, LIT-1359, read in full in NOTE-1061 from the bioRxiv preprint, version 2 (10 May 2023). The authors say the subcortical nulls “might indicate that subcortical affective processes are less modifiable by reappraisal than previously thought” (p. 20). Their closing sentence goes further, that reappraisal “is not able to modulate subcortical-level affective experience” (p. 22). THEORY-871’s “What this does not say” rejects that step to experience, and this entry does not carry it either.

Where the evidence stands

What the study shows is THEORY-871, Active, which this entry extends: that entry is the reading, and this one is the thesis. The evidence covers one instructed strategy, mostly reinterpretation, in two midlife community samples, with BOLD means at 2 mm voxels and one rating per trial. The promote_when above is THEORY-871’s condition before the twenty-fourth status review promoted it. It is carried unchanged, except for the version-of-record clause, because it asks what would make the thesis true and not what the study reported.
