Key takeaways
- Two collapse modes, and the distinction is the contribution. When attention collapses the map goes sparse. If it is sparse but not low-rank — close to an identity matrix — the paper calls it benign and the model trains fine. If it is sparse and simultaneously low-rank, it is malignant and the run crashes.
- So low entropy is not the criterion. The paper states this as a counterexample: by the entropy-collapse definition the benign state should crash, and it does not.
- The criterion offered instead is spectral energy concentration of
W_q^T W_k—SEC(d_q, s), the share of spectral energy in the topsdirections. In crashed models it concentrates into fewer than 10 directions; in healthy ones it stays spread. - Theorem 1 gives the conditions:
Xlow-rank andW = W_q^T W_klow-rank with a few dominant singular values together make the attention map sparse and low-rank with high probability. - The remedy comes from Weyl’s inequality.
σ₁(W₁+W₂) ≤ σ₁(W₁)+σ₁(W₂), so cap the step: ifα_t > τ·σ₁(W_{t−1})/σ₁(∇W_t), truncate it to that value. Three power iterations, and the authors say two suffice. - It removes warmup, at matched or better quality.

Standing in the anthology
It corrects an account, and the record carries both sides.
LIT-523 argues that entropy collapse causes
instability and proves a bound on the entropy. This says the entropy criterion
admits a stable counterexample and relocates the cause to the spectrum of
W_q^T W_k. One group against another, and nobody has adjudicated it.
It sharpens what SOTA-192 says about its own failure mode. That practice describes near-zero attention entropy as the failure. On this reading near-zero entropy is necessary and not sufficient, and the measurable predictor is concentration rather than entropy.
It is the second of three papers in this cluster to drop warmup by a spectral mechanism, and it is the only one to target the update rather than the weight.
