The case

U3 linked the poem and asked for modernized translations. A6: “Henley’s version of François Villon’s poem is already a radical translation: it replaces 15th-century French criminal argot with 19th-century English underworld slang”, and “Henley’s opacity is part of its charm.”

What it can show

That a celebrated translation can keep almost none of the source’s wording and still be taken as Villon. Its opacity raised QUESTION-023. The modern renderings made from it are CASE-012.
