The case
A39: “Suppose a pupil is repeatedly described as a troublemaker. Teachers scrutinize their behavior more intensely. Actions that would be interpreted generously in another pupil are treated as evidence of misconduct. The pupil becomes frustrated, resists the treatment, and begins acting in ways that confirm the school’s expectations.”
Held fixed: the label was false when first applied, and the pupil never comes to describe themself as a troublemaker. What changes is the school’s treatment, which changes what counts as evidence and what the pupil faces.
What it shows
- The attribution acts through others, not through belief. The first reading A39 gave: “The person need not agree with the description for it to affect their life.” The label works on the pupil by way of the teachers’ scrutiny and interpretation, which is TERM-075’s held attribution doing the work, with no change in the pupil’s own.
- Evidence that passes through the category’s use. The later misconduct is real, and it was produced in part by applying the label. By CLAIM-402, it cannot warrant the label as describing what the pupil was. “The original attribution may have been inaccurate. But the institutional consequences of that attribution helped produce later behavior that makes it appear retrospectively justified” (A39).
- The mechanism has a name and a source. It is Merton’s self-fulfilling prophecy (LIT-1398, registered unread), and the looping effects the record holds through CLAIM-402. Espeland and Sauder (LIT-1330) document the same mechanism for public rankings.
What it does not show
- That labels generally do this. It is stipulated, and A39 limited it at once (in the summary).
- Whether the pupil’s later conduct changes the pupil’s perspective or only their situation. The case is compatible with either; CASE-142 is the variant in which the person’s own organization changes, by resistance.
Note of 2026-10-29: Merton, read
Merton 1948, LIT-1398, which “What it shows” calls registered unread, is now read (NOTE-1409). The case is his mechanism, and the essay supports the case’s reading of it as working through others’ treatment rather than through the labelled person’s belief. In his §II the Black worker becomes a strikebreaker because the unions exclude him, not because he comes to see himself as one: exclusion leaves strikebreaking as his only way into the work. The case is unchanged.
