Context

The 2026-09-26 close readings on the metaphysics tag turned up two gaps. The record’s rule is to add a missing word rather than approximate it, as ADR-006 did for epistemology and logic.

  • Philosophy of mathematics. The mathematics topic is “mathematics read for itself”. Four held works are about mathematics rather than mathematics read for itself:
    • Carson’s Element, Philosophy of Mathematics from Descartes to Kant (a history of the philosophy of mathematics);
    • Weyl’s Philosophy of Mathematics and Natural Science;
    • Leitgeb & Ladyman on criteria of identity in mathematical structuralism, whose reader named the gap;
    • Corfield on duality as a category-theoretic concept.
  • Religion. The reader of the SEP Religion and Science entry found no topic for its subject, and recommended one, as its primary topic.
    • A second held work is also about religion: the paper on epistemic injustice in the clinical care of practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions.

Decision

Add both words to topics, each with a label and a blurb.

  • philosophy-of-mathematics joins the philosophy tag group (ADR-003).
  • religion stays outside it, as social-science and linguistics do:
    • one of its two works is a philosophical survey, the other a study in medical ethics;
    • the group labels philosophical questions, and religion is a subject that such questions, and others, take.

mathematics stays on every work where mathematics is also read for itself:

  • Weyl;
  • Leitgeb & Ladyman, whose graph theory is worked;
  • Corfield, whose category theory is worked.

Alternatives

  • Keep mathematics for the philosophy of mathematics. That is the nearest wrong word. Carson’s Element contains no mathematics read for itself.
  • Put religion in the philosophy group. Only one of its two works is philosophy.
