Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-762.
- Better on ImageNet, worse as fixed features (Table 1). Seven objectives beat softmax cross-entropy’s 77.0% top-1 significantly (label smoothing, sigmoid, extra final-layer L2, penultimate dropout, logit penalty, logit normalization, cosine softmax; squared error ties at 77.2%). On eight new-class datasets their penultimate features are worse by linear and k-NN readout. Mean linear transfer is 75.9% for softmax, 65.8% for cosine softmax and 48.3% for squared error.
- Class separation tracks the cost (§3.3–3.4). R² = 1 − d̄_within/d̄_total in cosine distance, on the ImageNet training set, is 0.349 for softmax and 0.420–0.845 for the rest (Table 3). Across losses it rank-correlates with mean linear transfer at ρ = −0.93 (p = 0.002). Collapse in Papyan’s metric, Tr(Σ_W Σ_B†)/C, runs from 21.2 for softmax to 0.33 for squared error (Table E.2).
- One knob moves both (Table 4). Cosine-softmax temperature τ from 0.01 to 0.08 raises R² from 0.236 to 0.770 and lowers mean linear transfer from 76.0% to 58.9%. Top-1 saturates at 77.5–77.6% from τ = 0.03.
- Same classes, the other way (Figure 6, Table C.2, Appendix F). Relearning the 1000 ImageNet classes from 40,000 held-out images, more separated features do better. Oxford Pets, with 25 of 37 classes in ImageNet, is the one dataset where they tie or win. On ImageNet-V2, -A, -Sketch, -R and -C, alternative losses are slightly better than softmax.
- Only the last layers differ (§3.2). CKA between networks trained with different losses is high up to about block 13 of 16 and diverges after. Fine-tuning changes exactly those layers, and fine-tuned transfer is flat across losses (Table 2: 85.1–86.4% mean).
- Separation is not needed for accuracy. AutoAugment adds 0.4–0.7 points without raising R² (Table E.3).
- Regime. ResNet-50 (and Inception v3, Table B.1), ImageNet only, early-stopped at 91.6–93.6% training accuracy (Table C.1), not trained to zero error.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-14 at the owner’s request for QUESTION-051 and THEORY-104, and read the same day in NOTE-762. Until now the record held this result only as reported in the neural-collapse review LIT-978. The reading narrows that report in two ways. The networks are not in the terminal phase, so the measured quantity is relative within-class variance, of which THEORY-083’s collapse is the limit. And “transfer worse” holds for new classes; for the same classes under input shift the more separated losses are slightly better. It is held as the measured cost for QUESTION-051’s second half, filed as THEORY-246 at that strength. It does not test THEORY-104, which compares layers of one network under a same-class shift; it compares losses at one layer, on new classes. The anthology does not hold it; it is about ML transfer and carries the candidate flag.
