Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-772. A skim: the review’s results are reports of other papers, not checked against them.
- Two families of model (§3).
- In the unconstrained-features model the penultimate features are free variables. Under it, collapse is the global optimum or the gradient-flow limit for cross-entropy and MSE, with and without weight decay (Ji et al.; Mixon et al.; Zhu et al.; Tirer & Bruna; Han et al., LIT-974).
- Local elasticity models feature drift with an SDE whose class coupling is chosen to favour separation.
- Neither keeps the data. That is why neither can explain NC1 reaching about 10⁻² on CIFAR-10 and about 1 on ImageNet.
- Collapse is not generalization (§4.1). Networks trained with SGD, Adam and L-BFGS all collapse on the training set and differ in test error (Zhu et al.). Collapse on test data is slower and weaker (Hui et al.). The CDNV bound of Galanti et al. ties the two only for large per-class samples.
- Collapse and transfer (§4.2). Galanti et al. bound few-shot transfer error by source-class collapse, when source and target classes come from one distribution. Kornblith et al. (2021) find that ImageNet networks with more collapse transfer worse to other datasets.
- No threshold (§4.1, §5). There is no agreed value of NC1 or CDNV at which a network counts as collapsed. The review asks for one.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-12 for QUESTION-051, and skimmed in NOTE-772. It is held as the map of the models of collapse up to 2022, not as a source of results. The record holds the original measurements as LIT-618, and reads two of the papers this review covers or anticipates in their own right: Han et al. (LIT-974, THEORY-278) and, after it, Thrampoulidis et al. (LIT-994, THEORY-286). No THEORY rests on it. A survey’s claims are other papers’. The one result it reported that the record lacked, that more collapsed ImageNet networks transfer worse (Kornblith et al. 2021), bears on QUESTION-051’s second half. It is now held as LIT-1044, read in NOTE-762 and filed as THEORY-246. The reading narrows the review’s report: the cost is for new classes, in early-stopped networks short of the terminal phase.
