Shan Gao (2016), arXiv preprint (book draft); published by Cambridge University Press, 2017 — ARXIV-1611.02738
Key takeaways
- Protective measurements, combined with the ontological-models assumption, show that the wave function is real. What it represents is the state of random discontinuous motion of particles in three-dimensional space, a picture that requires a stochastic, nonlinear collapse term in the dynamics.
Seeded from the abstract and a skim, before the reading in NOTE-140. What follows is what the work says about itself.
Gao asks whether the wave function is ontic, epistemic or something else, and, if ontic, what physical state it represents. Part one reviews the rival views critically, gives a new argument for the ontic view from protective measurements, and derives the free Schrödinger equation from spacetime translation invariance. Part two interprets the wave function as describing random discontinuous motion (RDM) of particles. Part three asks whether this ontology accounts for definite experience and how it fares under relativity.
Standing in the record
Filed from the 2026-09-26 sweep of the papers-feed tracker for philosophy: 40 seconds of active reading over 1 session. It was filed Deferred, unread. NOTE-140 is the close reading of 2026-09-26, and it placed the work: Active — worth reading as the fullest single statement of the protective-measurement argument for ψ-reality and of the RDM ontology. Its chapters 2, 3, 7.1 and 8.5 are also a well-referenced critical survey of ψ-epistemic, nomological, configuration-space-realist, Penrose and CSL views. Its central premises are contested (see Limitations), its collapse model is unconfirmed, and chapters 8–9 are openly speculative.
When seeded, before the reading in NOTE-140, the entry gave a priority for a deeper reading: medium — a substantial, much-endorsed monograph (t=40s). The skim captures the thesis and its route, but the protective-measurement argument in ch. 4 deserves a check.
What the seeding asked a deeper reading to check (NOTE-140 is that reading):
- A leading ψ-ontic argument (protective measurement), which should be checked against the critical literature on protective measurement. Whether the ontological-models assumption does the real work is the key question.
- RDM is a minority ontology. Chen (LIT-204) lists Gao (2017) among the book-length treatments. Compare with Dorato’s events (LIT-176) and Allori’s functionalism (LIT-200).
- Chapter 3’s critique of the nomological view bears on Allori (LIT-200).
