The summary is drawn from the publisher’s description and what the book is standardly cited for, and a reading should check it first. The publisher’s description says the alignment of Democratic partisanship, economic liberalism and civil-rights support “had crystallized in public opinion, state parties, and Congress by the mid-1940s”, and that top party leaders “were actually among the last to move”; the summary’s “from the late 1930s” is not checked.
