Key takeaways
- Constraint, defined without time scale. A constraint raises or lowers barriers to energy flow without transferring kinetic energy (p. 40). “Context-dependent” means it makes processes conditionally dependent (Gatlin; p. 67), which is not TERM-070’s constraint, conserved at the time scale of what it acts on. The book adopts TERM-070’s closure verbatim (pp. 93–94).
- Top-down by confinement. A coherent dynamic’s constitutive constraints act as “second-order” governing constraints, through negative feedback, holding components to a subregion of state space (pp. 79–84), and are “not spatiotemporally other than” the components (p. 81) (THEORY-1335).
- Levels by rates. Higher levels are slower, inter-level relations are constraint because the fast level completes before the slow one’s feedback arrives, and control is lost when the rates converge (pp. 183–190; THEORY-1306). Prior art for CLAIM-478, without its mechanism.
- History in structure. Coherent dynamics “carry their history on their backs” (p. 75), asserted by example; CASE-191 is a case where the present organization does not carry it.
- Not about chaos or free will. Kane, sensitivity, chaos and contextual emergence do not appear. The book accepts indetermination as the price of creativity (p. 235) without an account of control over it.
Standing in the record
Registered at the owner’s request on 2026-11-03 as the readable stand-in for Juarrero 1999 (LIT-1990), which Froese (NOTE-1521) cites among the top-down-constraint accounts it criticizes and which the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage” (A21) named as prior art for CLAIM-533 and CLAIM-478’s constraints. Read for those claims, for TERM-100 and CLAIM-532 (self-determination and history), for Jennings’s contextual emergence (THEORY-1314), and to settle whether Juarrero’s vocabulary is TERM-070’s.
