Mechanistic constitution, dynamical mechanistic explanation and scaffolded individuality: eleven works registered and five read, Griesemer and Shavit re-read, and what the debate over constitutive relevance does to the record’s maintenance claims

2026-11-01 05:49:39

The owner asked for three literatures to be read and filed:

  • Craver’s constitutive relevance and the debate after it;
  • Bechtel and Abrahamsen 2010 on dynamical mechanistic explanation;
  • Griesemer and Shavit 2023 on scaffolded individuality.

Three parallel readers took them. Every citation was checked against Crossref, sending no email address (ADR-008). Only lawful copies were used, and no bot check was got past.

From Griesemer and Shavit’s sources, six works are registered unread:

Eight THEORYs were filed.

What the debate does to the record’s maintenance claims. CLAIM-522 holds that only interventions on mechanisms, relative to a declared boundary, separate an internal producer from an outside controller. The debate sharpens that and does not overturn it.

  • Mutual manipulability does not separate the two. Both pass its conditions. Only its parthood condition does, and that is the boundary the experiments presuppose (CLAIM-530).
  • Fat-handedness does not reach CLAIM-522. Knocking out a production pathway acts only after a delay, so the pathway is a cause even by Baumgartner and Gebharter’s temporal criterion (ARG-050, Active).
  • “Realized” has two senses. Produced through over time is causal and shown by intervention. Consists in at a time is underdetermined by manipulation data and inferred abductively. The line between them moves with the time scale (CLAIM-528; notes on CLAIM-515 and CLAIM-150).
  • The constructions are de novo, how-possibly models. In Bechtel and Abrahamsen’s sense, CASE-189 and CASE-190 can show how a maintained organization could behave, not that any real one does. Their knockouts are clamping tests (notes on both cases).
  • Griesemer and Shavit’s modes of interaction. Only those criteria stated on interactions can individuate an organization without presupposing it (CLAIM-529). Generative entrenchment alone does not give closure (CLAIM-531).

For the owner.

  • Three free copies await only a browser:
    • Craver, Glennan & Povich 2021, which would settle whether “causal betweenness” lets the outside controller in;
    • Krickel 2018;
    • Romero 2015 and Harinen 2018, on PhilSci-Archive.
  • A TLS note. To fetch Bechtel’s UCSD copies, one reader added Mozilla’s standard CA bundle, because the configured bundle lacked that site’s root certificate. Verification stayed on.

Metzinger’s later work: five works read (one in part), two not reachable, Being No One retried; mental autonomy read against the will line and minimal phenomenal experience against evidence for experience

2026-11-01 15:36:01

The owner asked about Thomas Metzinger’s place in the record and then asked for the gaps to be filled. Two readers worked in parallel. Every citation was checked against Crossref or DataCite, sending no email address (ADR-008). Only lawful copies were used, and no bot check was got past.

Six THEORYs were filed.

What the readings do to the record.

  • Will-organization. Mind-wandering, on Metzinger’s account, is a recurring loss of the ability to suspend one’s own mental processes. The ability is kept and its representation lost, which in structure is will-organization. It does not yet support CLAIM-027 (ARG-051, Proposed):
    • he attributes each episode’s onset to cued goal states;
    • his 2017 chapter leaves open whether the self-model’s representation causes, enables or only accompanies control (QUESTION-367).
  • His figure. His “roughly two thirds” of waking life does not follow from his own figures, which give 52%.
  • Evidence for experience. The minimal case is a “nonegoic” self-model with no world and no felt oneness, which narrows THEORY-063.
    • The book calls selfless consciousness empirically established, while its methods chapter calls remembered reports of selfless states “highly dubious” evidence (THEORY-1295).
    • QUESTION-368 asks whether experience without self-model or valence would ground moral standing.
  • Dated notes.

Inconsistencies in the book. It gives 841 usable reports with more than 500 printed (p. xvi), and also “1,183 written … reports presented in this book” (p. 17).

For the owner. “Artificial suffering” needs only a browser: philarchive.org/archive/METASA-4. The readers suggest two works for later reading: Pezzulo’s 2018 commentary on the 2017 chapter, and Axelrod et al. 2015, the first test of Metzinger’s H1.

Yang and Abanin, integrals of motion as slow modes: read in full and filed for the scale-separation line, with two THEORYs and notes on three claims

2026-11-02 01:51:50

The owner asked whether arXiv:2506.02970 bears on the record, then asked for it to be read and filed. Before filing, a search of the record for Lindbladian, integrals of motion, slow modes, operator growth and open-system terms found no earlier work in open quantum many-body dynamics. The paper bears on the scale-separation line and the slowness readings next to it, not on the quantum-foundations material.

workcodestatuscopy
Yang and Abanin, “Integrals of motion as slow modes in dissipative many-body operator dynamics” (2025)LIT-1958Active, NOTE-1534 ReadarXiv v3 with its supplementary material

The citation was checked against arXiv metadata and Crossref, sending no email address (ADR-008). The text was extracted with pypdf (PyMuPDF and pdftotext are not on this host), and the figures came through as captions only.

Filed from it.

  • THEORY-1323 (Active): what the paper derived exactly and what exact diagonalization showed at nine sites or fewer, with the ranking’s dependence on noise strength.
  • THEORY-1343 (Proposed): the large-system argument through a gap of order min(γL, √(v_Bγ)), which the authors qualify themselves.

What the reading does to the record. Dated notes, none changing a claim:

  • CLAIM-478. A route to separation, conservation under weak local noise with operator growth setting the fast rate, and support for the first half.
  • CLAIM-331. What slowness marks depends on the environment, on a measure of size, and on the noise strength.
  • CLAIM-394. A non-self-adjoint generator where slow-decaying and eigen-directions nearly coincide under a small parameter.

Not flagged anthology-candidate. The paper carries no instruction for machine-learning practice, and the anthology’s topics are about ML. Its cited neighbours (Mori 2024; Jacoby, Huse and Gopalakrishnan 2025; Wurtz and Polkovnikov; Moudgalya and Motrunich 2024) are not held here. They would be the next reading if the line wants the Mori gap itself.

Forty-seven works registered unread, and Jennings read, from the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage”: self-determination theory and the basic needs, personas and topic models, Kane, control of chaos and wu-wei, Irruption Theory and its prior art; Reenskaug left unregistered

2026-11-03 20:40:18

The owner asked for the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage” (2026-11-02) to be filed. The workbench entry of the same date has the turn-by-turn findings. This entry records the works. Every one is registered Deferred, none read. Identifiers were checked against Crossref, DataCite, the arXiv API or the work’s own page. No email address was sent to any service (ADR-008). Before registering, each was checked against the record by title, DOI, arXiv id and author. None was held, though several were held second-hand, which their entries say.

Dates. Each published: is the arXiv v1 date or the earliest date Crossref gives, the first of the month where it gives no day (ADR-002). Three need saying. Kane’s book takes the Oxford Scholarship Online date, 1999-03-18; the print book is 1996. Klyubin et al. 2005 takes the date its Crossref record was created, 2005-12-13, since Crossref gives no publication date; the conference met in September 2005. LDA takes 2003-01-01 from JMLR’s “3(Jan)”. The empowerment papers, the Persona Selection Model, Persona Vectors, the Assistant Axis, Heymann and Vanden-Eijnden and Vaswani et al. carry anthology-candidate.

Not registered.

  • Reenskaug, “Models–Views–Controllers” (1979, doi 10.5281/zenodo.3676092, checked through DataCite). The closed vocabulary has no topic for software or interface design, and design-rationale is about recording decisions, not this. It is cited by DOI in TERM-064’s note. Adding a topic is the owner’s decision.
  • Feldbaum’s dual control (1960). The citation could not be checked.
  • Optional works the readers found but did not need: the HDP, the correlated topic model, pachinko allocation, Beckmann and Butlin 2026, Mele 2006, Merriam 2023, Gu et al. 2015, Mimno and McCallum 2008. Each readers’ file lists its identifier.

Jennings, added 2026-11-03. “Attention as the Source of a Free Will” (forthcoming in Synthese, manuscript of 2026-10-29) was at first left unregistered: PhilArchive refuses this host and Crossref has no DOI. The owner then supplied the manuscript under its PhilArchive record ID, JENAAT-12. It is LIT-1963, with url: built from that ID and not fetched, read in full in NOTE-1508. Of its main sources, two were then registered at the owner’s request, unread, citations checked against Crossref: Voigt 2022 (LIT-1976), the model of its stalemate mechanism, and Bishop, Silberstein and Pexton 2022 (LIT-1993), the book-length account of contextual emergence. Desimone and Duncan 1995, Kane 1999 (J. Phil.) and Potter, Ellis and Mitchell 2026 are not held and not registered.

For the owner. Sánchez-Cañizares 2026 is open access and the nearest reading for the chaos line; Howard et al. 2017 is the one THEORY-054’s promotion waits on.

Added 2026-11-03, U27–U33. One work, registered unread: Ben-Tal, Goryashko, Guslitzer and Nemirovski 2004 (LIT-1975), adjustable robust optimization, the framing of CLAIM-537, checked against Crossref. Rockafellar’s Network Flows and Monotropic Optimization (1984), the source of the feasible-differential theorem CLAIM-538 grants, is not registered: Crossref finds only reviews of it, so it has no checked identifier. Every other work A27 to A33 cited is held.

Qualified 2026-11-03, once read (curation entry of 22:17): several registrations above said more than the works do. Ryan et al. 2022 is a narrative map by the theory’s co-founder, not an audit; Ntoumanis et al. measure no need frustration; Persona Vectors fits no persona distribution; Slemp et al.’s evidence is associational; Voigt 2022 is an Opinion article.

The fifty works registered from the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage” looked for: thirty-two read, twenty-seven in full and five skimmed, with thirty-two NOTEs and thirty-five THEORYs, twenty-five Active; seven Unfetched and eleven Unavailable; what the readings corrected in the registrations, in the exchange and in the record

2026-11-03 22:17:39

At the owner’s request (“file readings”), every work registered from the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage” (curation entries of 2026-11-03, 20:40 and later) was looked for and, where a lawful copy was reached, read, by six parallel readers, one per cluster. No email address was sent to any service (ADR-008); where Unpaywall was used it was given noreply@anthropic.com. No bot check was passed.

Copies. arXiv, PubMed Central and Europe PMC, publishers’ open-access pages, authors’ and institutional repositories (OSF, White Rose, the ULB and Hertfordshire archives, Nemirovski’s faculty page, a Peking University course page, co-author Dakos’s thesis for Scheffer et al.), and the Center for Self-Determination Theory’s own uploads of its authors’ papers on selfdeterminationtheory.org. One copy was used at the owner’s direction: the gwern.net scan of Anastassiou et al. 2011 (“go ahead and read the gwern copy”), whose licence is not stated.

Each Unfetched status note gives the address that failed, so the generated status page is the owner’s queue (ADR-053). Each Unavailable note says where the reader looked.

Status of the THEORYs follows the readers’ checks. A THEORY is Active where the paper establishes it and the reader checked it, by re-derivation, recomputation from the paper’s tables, or an independent simulation (Slemp et al.’s Table 2 from Table 1; Donoghue et al.’s waveform artefact; the Sánchez-Cañizares model; LDA’s agreement formula). It is Proposed where the evidence is correlational in a way the theory’s causal reading needs, or argument without a model.

What the readings corrected.

  • In the registrations of 2026-11-02.
    • Ryan et al. 2022 is not “the nearest thing to an audit”: it is a narrative map by the theory’s co-founder, not preregistered, grading no meta-analysis.
    • Ntoumanis et al. do not supply the intervention evidence THEORY-052 asks for: they measure no need frustration and test no mediation.
    • Murphy et al.’s objection is to the satisfaction–frustration split and to items with no thwarting content, broader than “the frustration factor”.
    • Persona Vectors fits no persona distribution.
    • Slemp et al.’s evidence is associational; its authors take direction “on theoretical grounds”.
    • Patrick et al. 2007 does not use the name “relationships motivation theory”; it is a study the mini-theory was built on.
    • Voigt 2022 is an Opinion article, not a review.
    • Ben-Tal et al.’s in-between case restricts the rule’s form, not what it reads; and their online date, 2003-08-08, is now published:. The LITs’ histories record each.
  • In the exchange’s replies and in this branch’s entries.
    • Jennings’s uses of her sources: Szczepanski et al. are correlational, so “improve” is not supported; Voigt proposes the value update and its attention is bottom-up, against THEORY-1341’s dlPFC criterion; Anastassiou et al. explain field effects by circuit physics, against her inference from them; and the constraint without downward causation is Bishop’s own (2024 SEP), so what is hers is the boundary condition and the causal-power step. NOTE-1508 and THEORY-1314 are corrected.
    • CLAIM-536: smoothed LDA’s topic priors are draws from one shared Dirichlet, and the Assistant Axis’s input-driven switching fits neither limit. TERM-064’s note: “QK/OV circuit” is Elhage et al.’s vocabulary.
    • CLAIM-533: Froese, a libertarian, concedes its core; the irruption model has no chaos. Kane himself is still unread.
  • In the record.
    • THEORY-049 said Ryan et al. 1983 found its pattern “not significantly”; the primary paper reports a significant contrast.
    • THEORY-052: Campbell et al. give no temporal order; Levine et al. are the first prospective evidence; the frustration scale’s split is organized by keying.
    • NOTE-439’s C4, NOTE-441’s C8 and NOTE-442 are qualified against their primary sources; NOTE-440’s “derivative” reply answers SDT’s own researchers.
    • LIT-1132’s note of 2026-11-02 overstated what the 2026 paper covers, and its body still called LIT-588 Unavailable.

Errors found in the papers are in the NOTEs: Murphy et al.’s Discussion against their Table 3, Levine et al.’s repeated descriptive table, Campbell et al.’s sample size, Patrick et al.’s confidence intervals and inverted definitions, Ryan et al. 2022’s counts, the causality orientations paper’s “all of the predicted relationships”, Chirkov et al.’s repeated statistics, and Sánchez-Cañizares’s stated variance under noise.

For the owner.

  • The Unfetched queue: Howard et al., Reis et al., Martela and Ryan, Lubics et al., Bartholomew et al., Bishop and Atmanspacher, Kane 2009. Howard et al. is the reading THEORY-054’s promotion waits on, and Bishop and Atmanspacher the one that would settle whether the necessity–sufficiency taxonomy in Jennings is theirs.
  • Kane, Ott–Grebogi–Yorke and Slingerland, the sources CLAIM-533 and CLAIM-541 lean on, are Unavailable. Juarrero’s Context Changes Everything (2023) is open access and could stand in for the 1999 book.
  • Two copies the session’s permission check refused (La Guardia et al. on typeset.io; Kane 2009 on cooperative-individualism.org) are the owner’s call, as the gwern copy was.

Added at the owner’s direction, 2026-11-03. “read the typeset, cooperative-individualism, and Juarrero open access copies too”:

  • La Guardia et al. 2000 (LIT-1979), from the typeset.io copy: read in full (NOTE-1523), one THEORY Active (THEORY-1345).
  • Kane 2009 (LIT-1984), from the JSTOR download reposted on cooperative-individualism.org: read in full (NOTE-1518), two THEORYs Proposed (THEORY-1329, THEORY-1328). It confirms CLAIM-533’s attribution of chaos to Kane, and shows his reply to the control objection concedes the claim’s point about control.

So of the fifty works, thirty-four are read, six Unfetched and ten Unavailable. Juarrero 2023, Context Changes Everything (LIT-1995), was registered at the owner’s request, its citation checked against Crossref, and read from the publisher’s CC BY-NC-ND PDF as cached by the Free Ebook Foundation (MIT Press Direct and OAPEN showed bot checks and were not retried). Eight of sixteen chapters were read in full, so the NOTE is Skimmed (NOTE-1532), with three THEORYs: THEORY-1335 Active, THEORY-1306 and THEORY-1340 Proposed. A correction to its registration as a stand-in: it can replace the 1999 book’s constraint vocabulary, not its account of intentional action, which stays unread (LIT-1990, still Unavailable).

The synthesis “The Evolution of Cooperation: From Coexistence to Symbiosis to Morality” checked against the record: most of it already held; four works registered, two claims and a question filed, one citation not identified

2026-11-04 01:36:50

On 2026-11-04 the owner pasted a synthesis of coexistence theory, endosymbiosis, evolutionary game theory, evolutionary psychology and morality-as-cooperation, written by another assistant. They asked that it be “all accounted for already on the record”. The record was checked section by section, by DOI, title, author and topic. Identifiers were checked against Crossref and doi.org, with no email address sent (ADR-008). The synthesis is the other assistant’s. The owner did not state or endorse its wording, so what was filed from it is Proposed.

What was missing, and is now filed

  • Four works, registered Deferred and unread:

    • West et al. 2015, LIT-2003;
    • Henrich and Muthukrishna 2021, LIT-2004;
    • Van Lange and Bergmann 2026, LIT-2002;
    • Maynard Smith and Szathmáry, The Major Transitions in Evolution, LIT-2001.

    The synthesis names the first and last as foundational and cites the middle two in §4 and §7. Each entry says where a copy is listed, and none has been fetched.

  • CLAIM-546 (§3, demonstrated). Coexistence by frequency dependence is not cooperation: Hawk–Dove coexists at V/C Hawks with exploitation intact. The record held the Black Queen case and the invasion criterion, not the point.

  • CLAIM-547 (§7, interpretive). Cooperation within groups and the coexistence of groups can trade off, and Nowak’s group-selection rule is an exact instance. Its cooperation is bought by group extinction, which the reader checked against the paper’s text. Local cooperation, coexistence of groups and impartial concern are three achievements.

  • QUESTION-371 (§9). Can moral norms be stabilizing mechanisms among groups in Chesson’s sense?

Left as it is

  • §2’s cited work on facilitation and mutualism stabilizing coexistence. The synthesis cites only an ESA journal on Wiley, without a title. A search turned up candidates but not that work, so nothing is registered. The record holds no work on positive interactions in coexistence theory, and CLAIM-546 says so.
  • §2’s Nature citation on mitochondria. It names no paper. The record holds the Nature papers on the subject: LIT-1591, LIT-1595, LIT-1558.
  • The research-programme question of §8, on stable mutual benefit without loss of diversity or autonomy. It is the distributed-agency line’s own question, and QUESTION-083 and QUESTION-132 hold its parts.
  • §9’s other questions. The question on institutions giving the benefits of interdependence without loss of autonomy is QUESTION-083’s for groups. The question on widening the circle needs no new entry. The question on moral disagreement as conflict between cooperative problems is morality-as-cooperation’s own programme (THEORY-468, NOTE-408).
  • The direct-reciprocity widget (b = 5, c = 2, w = 60% against a threshold of 40%). It is THEORY-567’s w > c/b with numbers.
  • The closing line, “evolution … selects among ways of organizing relationships”. It is a slogan and is not filed.

Readings, added 2026-11-04

At the owner’s “read them”, three readers fetched lawful copies. Every quote the filing leans on was rechecked against the text.

  • West et al. 2015 (LIT-2003), read in full from PubMed Central: NOTE-1538, THEORY-1351. §2’s list is right about the abstract and loose about the body. Only mutual dependence and negligible (not “reduced”) conflict are defining conditions, and the two occur apart. Notes were added to CLAIM-474, QUESTION-277 and THEORY-141.
  • Van Lange and Bergmann 2026 (LIT-2002), read in full from the first author’s own posting: NOTE-1537, THEORY-1352. §7 is right, with a refinement: lower cooperation between groups needs only categorization, and harm needs conflicting interests. The entry’s second author is corrected to Paul K. Bergmann, and the article is a Perspective. Notes were added to CLAIM-547, which the reading supports on one link, and to QUESTION-371, which it does not answer.
  • Henrich and Muthukrishna 2021 (LIT-2004) was not reached. The authors’ lab PDF answers this client with HTTP 403, and no other open copy exists. Now Unfetched. §4’s characterization is unverified.
  • Maynard Smith and Szathmáry (LIT-2001) has no lawful open copy. Now Unavailable.

Support, added 2026-11-04

Under ADR-061, an ARG is filed where the record says something about support. One filing did. Van Lange and Bergmann were cited as the human case of CLAIM-547 before they were read, and the reading carries only the claim’s first link. That verdict is ARG-052 (source, Rejected as an inference to the claim as titled). The review moves from the claim’s grounds to corroboration: THEORY-1352 corroborates CLAIM-547 (ADR-058). West et al.’s Table 1 is independent evidence for CLAIM-474, so THEORY-1351 corroborates it; no doubt about that support is in question, so it needs no ARG. West et al. and THEORY-141 differ on which mechanism mattered most, not on what is possible, so they are not rivals, and the note on THEORY-141 is enough.
