The claim
The owner’s review of the pull request, 2026-10-27, asked for “a concise synthesis note distinguishing five relationships”, which “should explicitly mark where implications fail”, so that the theory is “a research program with distinct testable transitions”. It is filed as a claim because it can be wrong. It holds that the five are distinct, and that is a thesis.
| relationship | central question | where the record holds it |
|---|---|---|
| interconnection | what joint behaviour becomes possible or impossible? | CLAIM-471 (physical constraint formation); CLAIM-480 (composition) |
| compatibility | which local states or descriptions admit a coherent global realization? | CLAIM-471 (gluing); CLAIM-143; THEORY-012 |
| dynamics | which compatible, frustrated or differentiated organizations actually persist? | CLAIM-481; CLAIM-478; QUESTION-281 |
| individuation | which persistent organizations have sufficiently robust identity and boundaries? Further, autonomy: which of them also contribute to maintaining their own constitutive constraints? | CLAIM-157; CLAIM-395; QUESTION-115 |
| inquiry | which organizations can measure and revise their models or apparatuses under resource bounds? | CLAIM-470; CLAIM-475; CLAIM-469; QUESTION-285 |
Where the implications fail
Each step can hold while the next fails. Every line below has a source the record has read or a demonstration it holds.
- Interconnection without compatibility. Pairwise relations, each satisfiable, can fail together around a cycle. Torres-Hugas et al. (THEORY-1082) give the holonomy case, the frustrated graph energy leaves a residual in the cycle space (CLAIM-471), and empirical contextuality is a third case (CLAIM-131).
- Compatibility without attraction. A pattern of synchrony can be invariant under every admissible dynamics and still not attract (Stewart, Golubitsky and Pivato; THEORY-1065). Conservatively coupled oscillators have a compatible collective mode, and their relative mode never decays (CLAIM-481).
- Geometry of frustration without a stability boundary. The point of maximal frustration is not where a pattern loses stability; it loses it earlier (THEORY-1087).
- Persistence without individuality. Synchrony can come from a common drive (QUESTION-063). Retention, dynamical independence and causal informativeness need not pick one boundary (QUESTION-115). A spectral gap can support prediction without any organization that maintains itself (CLAIM-481).
- Persistence without autonomy. A pattern can be maintained entirely by external supply. Closure, in which the processes maintain their own constraints, is a further condition (CLAIM-395; Montévil and Mossio, LIT-582).
- Effective constraint without a new law. Composition yields boundary constraints that no part has, sometimes of a new kind (CLAIM-480; THEORY-1090). They are effective, not fundamental.
- Observation without inquiry. Correlation, measurement, record and use can each occur without the next (QUESTION-285). Decoherence can occur without usable records (Zurek, NOTE-1229).
- Self-revision without reliability. An apparatus that revises its comparison rules by consistency alone converges to agreement its authors call learning to lie (THEORY-1088). Coherence is not knowledge (CLAIM-342).
- Askable without answerable, and the reverse. Formulating a question is itself bounded (CLAIM-475). Even when a configuration exists, the evidence may not determine it, and when it does, finding it may cost too much (Singer; NOTE-1224).
The program
The transitions are where the work is. For each, the program asks for the conditions under which it occurs, and for a case in which it fails. The open questions:
- QUESTION-282 asks how correspondence structures are themselves generated. Almost all the mathematics takes them as input. The owner’s review called this “one of the genuinely unfinished parts of the program”.
- QUESTION-283 asks when composition forces a richer relational vocabulary.
- QUESTION-281 asks how forms arise and are unmade.
- QUESTION-115 asks which criteria of individuation agree.
- QUESTION-285 asks what turns observation into inquiry.
The central experiment is CASE-179. It is one network in which physical coupling, correspondence maps and apparatus revision are manipulated independently, so that the transitions can be made to come apart on purpose.
What it does not claim
That the five are a sequence every system passes through, or a ranking of degrees of existence. That they exhaust the transitions that matter. Or that the analogies between physical, biological, institutional and epistemic cases are identities. A23 §XII kept the causal, epistemic and normative mechanisms apart, and so does this claim.
Note of 2026-10-31: the order of the achievements is not a dependency order
At U20 of the exchange “Analyze nucleation concepts”, the owner asked of the developmental sequence the assistant had laid out: “is the sequence presented here something we’ve demonstrated or just an artifact of the order in which we encountered independent organizational achievements in our particular inquiry?” A20 conceded: it “is not a demonstrated universal developmental sequence”. It gave converse failures this claim’s table lacks, which lists only the forward ones: “Reconstruction requires prior organizational autonomy: No”; “Inquiry requires endogenous material regeneration: No”; “A scientist can revise a measurement apparatus without that apparatus autonomously producing its own parts”. So the five are better read as a partial order of distinct achievements, and a later one can occur where an earlier one is absent. The title’s “which of those” and “which of them” read as nesting; at the owner’s decision the title was revised in version 3 to state a partial order.
The owner’s rule of method is kept here: derive the dependency structure of the achievements separately from the order in which an inquiry met them. An inquiry’s order can harden into apparent structure, as anchors entrench (CLAIM-184). The status and warrant are unchanged.
Note of 2026-10-31: an account in which resolving incompatibility is individuation
The Simondonian readings filed today (THEORY-1276, THEORY-1277) hold a position this claim denies, and do not argue for it.
- They collapse compatibility into individuation. Bencherki and Iliadis: “Information is therefore what triggers metastable systems … to resolve their internal incompatibility into an organised reality”, and “information and communication lead to individuation—the constitution of new entities or collectives” (LIT-1922, ms. pp. 7–8). Iliadis: information is “a meaning that arises when an operation of individuation discovers that the two disparate yet real dimensions may be a system” (LIT-1911, p. 11). In this claim’s table, finding that two local descriptions admit a coherent whole is compatibility, and robust identity and boundaries are individuation, a separate achievement. In the readings, the first is the second.
- It is not a defeater. defeated_if asks for “a general result that collapses two adjacent steps”. The readings define the collapse in; they give no result. Their own limitation, that nothing counts as a failure to inform (NOTE-1485, “Open questions”), is what this claim’s “Interconnection without compatibility” and “Persistence without individuality” lines supply: cases where the resolution fails or does not last.
- “Levels, not stages” is a different axis. The readings’ rejection of stages (LIT-1922, ms. p. 21) is about persons and organizations as levels of entities. This claim’s rejection of a nested sequence is about kinds of achievement. They agree in rejecting a ladder and share nothing else. CLAIM-526 takes up the levels proposition and the “scaling up vanishes” conclusion drawn from it (LIT-1902, p. 1364).
No status, title or warrant changes.
Note of 2026-11-01: reproduction, individuality and inheritance in Griesemer and Shavit
LIT-188 (NOTE-173, re-read 2026-11-01) is a source for this claim’s form, from evolutionary transitions, though it does not say so.
- A sequence offered as a normal table. Its three stages, coordination, cooperation and collaboration, are “idealized in the sense that it identifies one possible pathway … analogous to ‘normal’ development as outlined in normal tables in embryology”, with other pathways “heterochronic” (§1). Reverse pathways are given: new disciplines run from collaboration to coordination. So the stages are not offered as a nested sequence either.
- Three achievements whose order the paper leaves open. It separates a new level of reproduction, a new level of individuality and a new inheritance system, and orders them three ways. A demic group can be a “candidate for higher-level reproducers” that only “post-transition” evolves the integration “to count them higher-level individuals” (§2). A new level of reproduction “may indicate the emergence of a new level of individuality, but not yet of a transition in inheritance system” (§2). And inheritance systems “seem likely to evolve in tandem” with individuality (§3). NOTE-173 recorded the second and third. The first adds reproduction without individuality, a line this claim’s list of failed implications lacks.
- Persistence without autonomy, as an outcome. One of the three fates of a conexus is to persist, unstable, “maintained by external ecological scaffolding” (§2), which is this claim’s “persistence without autonomy”. CLAIM-531 adds that entrenchment can also hold without closure.
No status, title or warrant changes.
Note of 2026-11-04: West et al. 2015, read
West, Fisher, Gardner and Kiers (LIT-2003, NOTE-1538) define a transition in individuality by two conditions, mutual dependence and negligible conflict. Their Table 1 separates the two in both directions: social aphids have negligible conflict without mutual dependence, and Melipona bees have the reverse. That is “none implies the next” inside what this claim calls individuation. Their two steps, forming a group and then transforming it, are a sequence, but they say the steps “may not have clear borders”, and between species specialization can come before the group forms. No conflict with this claim. No status, title or warrant changes.
