The claim
The owner, at U8: “maybe relata:relations::realization:specifications/constraints?” It came after U6, which set the scope (“the project’s ambitions are extremely abstract and unrestricted”), and U7, which found the analogy in luria (CLAIM-476). The claim is filed without a domain.
Two axes, not one opposition. A8 §1 and A9 §1 corrected the analogy before using it: relations are not themselves specifications. Relation types are specified and particular relations realized, and entity kinds are specified and particular entities realized.
| Specification | Realization | |
|---|---|---|
| Entity | the conditions under which something counts as an entity of a kind | a particular entity meeting them |
| Relation | the conditions under which a relation is admissible, and what it commits to | a particular relation holding between particular entities |
In the record, CLAIM specifies an entity kind and each claim realizes it;
rests_on specifies a relation type and each dependency realizes it. A8:
“The constraints don’t necessarily specify the individual entities in
advance. They specify which configurations of entities and relations are
admissible.” So the claim’s first half: what an entity is, is partly
fixed by its place in a constrained configuration, and “Its identity as a
claim is established within a structure of constraints.” The owner’s U6
observation that a typed relation is less flexible than its relata
(CLAIM-479) is the record’s own instance of the asymmetry the
analogy rests on.
The recursion. The second half is what keeps the frame from being structure-first. A8 §6: “Those constraints may themselves be historically constituted, maintained, and transformed through the very processes they organize”, and so “constraints are themselves realizations within larger relational structures.” A9 §2’s example is a membrane, which constrains transport and is itself a structure the transport-dependent chemistry must produce. The read prior art for this half is Montévil and Mossio (LIT-582, read in NOTE-468): a constraint is an entity that acts on a process while its relevant aspects are conserved at that process’s time scale, and closure is a set of constraints each depending on and generating another (TERM-070). So a constraint at one time scale is a realization maintained at another, and A10 §7 states the role-relativity: “Constraint at level n ≈ realized organization at level n−1”. Pattee (LIT-1190, read in NOTE-952) supplies the case where a specification is itself material: symbolic constraints are realized in rate-independent structures and constrain rate-dependent dynamics, and in semantic closure the reader of the symbols is built from the symbols.
So neither side is prior without qualification. A10 §1: “What something is depends partly on the constraints governing its possible relationships, while those constraints depend on something realizing them.” That is how this differs from the two frames A10 set it against: a substance-first ontology, and “a pure structure-first ontology” that “risks treating relations as fundamental while leaving unexplained how structure is physically instantiated.”
Its neighbours in the record. It is the frame of which two filed theses are domain cases. CLAIM-151 holds that a communicative act is partly constituted by its relations to roles, norms and uptake, and CLAIM-136 that communicative relata have no identity beyond what their relations differentiate. CLAIM-405 supplies the point that relativity to a fixed criterion is not arbitrariness, which this claim needs for its “partly fixed”. CLAIM-195 is its case inside the record: the constraint set that a claim’s persistence is relative to is “partly constitutive, since it defines what the objects are”, and is fixed by an amendable decision. Ladyman and Lorenzetti’s effective OSR (LIT-184, read in NOTE-129) is the read precedent for scale-relative structure that is real without one privileged decomposition, which A9 §10 set beside it; A9’s own distinction is that effective OSR says what to be realist about and this claim says how some structures come to persist.
What it does not say
- Not that a specification produces its realizations. A9 §1: “model theory alone doesn’t establish that the specification causes its models to exist. Mathematical satisfaction is not physical production.” Goguen and Burstall’s theory–model connection (LIT-1661, unread) relates the two “without either being ontologically prior”.
- Not that the relata are eliminated. It is non-eliminative, as the record’s structural realism is (CLAIM-136; CLAIM-150’s stronger form).
- Not that a specification individuates. A8 §5: two models of one specification “need not be numerically identical” even if isomorphic, so “relational specifications alone may establish kinds and admissibility conditions without uniquely determining particular individuals.” What else individuates (history, continuity, symmetry breaking, primitive numerical diversity) is left open, as CLAIM-136 leaves it.
- Not that every constraint is one kind of thing. A9 §12 listed logical, physical, biological, computational, institutional and normative constraints, each with its own source of force, and warned that “treating every constraint as physically causal in the same way would probably erase precisely the distinctions worth preserving.” The claim is stated over all of them and asserts no reduction among them.
- Not that every organization maintains its own constraints. A9 §6 separated externally imposed, adaptive and organizationally closed constraints; only the third is closure, and a thermostat’s feedback is not it. “Maintained by something” is not “maintained by itself”.
- Not that it is new. A9 §15 found close precedent for each ingredient (Simondon, Montévil and Mossio, Maturana and Varela, Pattee, Brandom, Hacking, Searle, Barad, Ladyman and Lorenzetti, Goguen and Burstall) and named only the combination, with ontology revision treated as re-individuation, as a possible contribution.
- Not that identification shows it. That a specification picks out its models, or a probe its realizations, does not show that the specification constitutes them (CLAIM-150).
The exchange’s own name for the developed position, “relational constraint realism” (A9 §16, A10 §8), is not adopted here: the owner has not taken it up.
Note of 2026-10-27 (later): an unrestricted template, and Bohr as the precedent
Two readings bear on how this claim is unrestricted. Jaksland 2024 (LIT-1673, NOTE-1230) distinguishes a metaphysics applied once to the one reality and extended in scope, which is Barad’s (THEORY-1083), from a template that each domain instantiates. This claim is the second: it is stated over every domain and “settled domain by domain”. Jaksland shows what each route costs. Barad’s needs ontological features that admit no approximation (THEORY-1086); a template needs, in each domain, a warrant of that domain’s own. The record’s route is the second, and the owner’s “extremely abstract and unrestricted” (U6 of 2026-10-27) is an unrestricted template, not a claim that a fundamental ontology settles every domain.
Faye and Jaksland (LIT-1672, NOTE-1220) supply the physical precedent closest to the claim’s non-eliminative “partly fixed”, and it is Bohr, not Barad. Bohr’s relational holism is epistemic: properties are had only relative to an experimental arrangement, and “both atomic objects and instruments are real, and as such they figure as relata in a sentence like ’… is recorded to have position p in relation to …’” (THEORY-1076). Barad’s phenomena are “relations without preexisting relata” (2003, 815, as both readings quote it), which is eliminative at the fundamental level. Rovelli’s relational quantum mechanics is a second non-eliminative case: values relational, systems prior to interactions (THEORY-1071).
Note of 2026-10-27 (later still): mechanism, universality and kinds
The exchange’s four later turns kept working on this claim. Three results bear on it.
- A mechanism for the recursion. The owner’s U12 (“a coverage gap wrt scale separation and how that participates in creating structure”) led to CLAIM-478, which rests on this claim. A fast realization settles into a relation that constrains over a slower window, and organization near an instability creates new slow modes. A13: “What is a dynamic realization at one timescale becomes an effective specification or constraint at another.”
- Many realizations, one specification. A12 §4 read renormalization as “a route from variable realizations to stable specifications”: distinct microscopic systems flow to the same effective structure. That is a physical mechanism for what CLAIM-137 holds of communicative kinds, an invariant that does not depend on any one realization (Wilson, LIT-1632, unread).
- Neighbours on the formal side. A11 found Barwise and Seligman’s classifications, with tokens, types and a satisfaction relation joined by infomorphisms, “the closest formal predecessor to the relata/relations analogy itself” (LIT-1019, unavailable). It found Deutsch and Marletto’s constructor theory, laws as possible and impossible tasks, a sharper sense of a constraint being real (LIT-1663, unread). A11’s question about infomorphisms, when a distinction enacted in one apparatus can be carried faithfully into another, is the pragmatic-transport line’s question in another vocabulary.
Note of 2026-10-27 (later): constructor theory and Rovelli read
- Deutsch and Marletto (LIT-1663, read in NOTE-1219) bear on defeater (b). They individuate kinds of substrate modally, by which tasks are possible on them: an information variable is a set of attributes whose permutations and cloning are possible (THEORY-1066). Instantiating information is “an exact, intrinsic property of the substrate” (§4). The possibility facts doing the work are realized by no particular thing; constructors, the realized part, are only ever approximate (“No perfect constructors exist in nature”, §2; THEORY-1078). That presses on defeater (b), a constraint that individuates while realized by nothing, without settling it: the work is at the level of kinds, and the paper treats possibilities as laws of physics, not as specifications prior to any realization. The claim should say whether a law of possibility counts as something that realizes a constraint. A line the paper does not develop is close to A10 §7’s role-relativity: “Loops are excluded, because a substrate on a loop is a constructor” (§2).
- Rovelli 1996 (LIT-1635, read in NOTE-1227; THEORY-1068) confirms the note above that relational quantum mechanics is non-eliminative, and on its own text. Values are relational, and the systems are assumed: “Assume that the world can be decomposed (possibly in a variety of ways) in a collection of systems” (§III.A, p. 10), each characterized by the questions that can be asked of it. “Characterized”, not “constituted”.
Note of 2026-10-27 (U15–U23): the synthesis the exchange ended on
The exchange continued for nine more turns, from U15 at 14:41 to U23 at 16:19, and closed on a restatement of this claim. A23 §XIV named it “Relational constraint realism: a dynamical and resource-bounded account”. A23 §I gave the analogy its dynamical form, realized interactions ⇄ effective constraints, and its last line was “Relations organize realizations; realizations sustain relations; and their recursive interaction can generate new individuals, constraints, and possibilities of inquiry.” The name is not filed. A13’s name was not filed either.
Four things bear on the claim.
- A demonstrated case. CLAIM-480 corroborates it. When the interior of a composite is eliminated, it leaves its boundary an effective coupling that no part has. The constraint is realized by the interior and changes with it. “The interior has effectively become apparatus” (A22 §4).
- Inquiry falls under it. The owner’s U15 and U17 carry the analogy into inquiry. A question stands to its findings as a specification to its realizations (CLAIM-470), and specifying is itself a bounded realization (CLAIM-475). Read that way, the claim’s unrestricted domain includes the record’s own practice.
- A pressure on “the constraints are realized too”. A23 §XII: “Not all constraints are generated by interactions in the same sense. Conservation laws, symmetries, or background structures can constrain physical interactions without being produced by the particular interactions under investigation. The constraints that emerge through composition are often effective restrictions or boundary behaviors, not newly fundamental laws.” The claim says constraints are realized. It does not say they are realized by the interactions they constrain. The exchange’s examples are all of the effective kind, so the claim’s support is strongest there. Whether a conservation law is “realized” in the claim’s sense is open.
- Individuation is graded and many-sided. A23 §VI set out six properties that “can be measured or argued for separately”: relational coherence, dynamical persistence, effective autonomy, boundary robustness, constraint maintenance and operational self-modification. That agrees with QUESTION-115’s finding that the criteria need not pick one boundary. A relatum constituted by constraints can be constituted in some of these respects and not others.
A23 §XII also sorted the synthesis by warrant:
- mathematically established under stated assumptions;
- physically established in particular systems;
- conditional interpretation;
- open philosophical hypothesis.
This claim is in the last group. Its interpretive warrant stands.
Note of 2026-10-27 (evening): the readings of the U15–U23 works
- Baez and Fong (NOTE-1223) give a demonstrated case of one specification with many realizations. The black box is many-to-one: a 2Ω resistor and two 1Ω resistors in series behave the same (p. 7). It is onto for resistor circuits (Prop. 2.12). Defeater (b) is touched lightly. The identity, an ideal wire, is the behaviour of no finite circuit, only approached by them. It is an idealization supplied by the formalism, not a constraint realized by nothing.
- Di Biagio and Rovelli 2025 (NOTE-1214) keep RQM non-eliminative. A system “is more appropriately thought of as consisting of a set of physical variables” (§V, p. 4). What holds a perspective moves from the system to a commutative subalgebra, and a whole system may hold none. The relata are still assumed.
Note of 2026-10-29: what holds it back
Defeater (b) has a candidate the record holds and has not ruled on. A symmetry or conservation law individuates kinds (Wigner’s classification, discussed in CLAIM-134), and Deutsch and Marletto’s possibility facts do the same (THEORY-1066), with nothing obviously realizing them. The claim has not said whether such a law counts as realizing a constraint, which its notes of 2026-10-27 ask. It rests on CLAIM-405 for “partly fixed”, which the same review promoted.
A second hold, independent of (b): by its note of 2026-10-27 the claim is a template, warranted domain by domain, and the record holds no domain where constraints are shown to constitute, not only characterize, identity. Its filed domain cases, CLAIM-136 and CLAIM-151, are Proposed. CLAIM-480, the one held case, shows only the recursion: a constraint realized by an interior.
Note of 2026-10-30: what holds it back
Defeater (b)‘s candidate is still unruled: whether a symmetry or conservation law, or Deutsch and Marletto’s possibility facts (THEORY-1066), counts as realizing a constraint. The template still has no held domain case either, since CLAIM-136 and CLAIM-151 are Proposed. CLAIM-151 was revised on 2026-10-30 only in its edges (CLAIM-004 left rests_on, CLAIM-255 left complements), and it stays Proposed, held by CLAIM-221’s unanswered residue.
Note of 2026-10-31: transduction, and a priority that is logical but not chronological
Two things in the Simondonian readings filed today bear on this claim’s recursion. Both come through commentators: Simondon’s own text is Unavailable here (LIT-1648, LIT-1900).
- Transduction states the recursion as propagation. Bencherki and Iliadis translate Simondon (2005, p. 32) on transduction as action propagating “from kin to kin” (de proche en proche): “each constituted region of structure serves as a principle of constitution to the next region, in such a way that a change extends progressively at the same time as the structuring operation” (LIT-1922, ms. p. 14; THEORY-1276). In this claim’s terms, a realization becomes the constraint on the next realization. That is “constraints are themselves realizations within larger relational structures”, in the direction of growth. It is a third reading beside Montévil and Mossio and Pattee, and the weakest: secondary and translated, with no mechanism or time scale, which are what CLAIM-478 adds. Same structure, and no claim about mechanism.
- “Logically, not chronologically, prior.” Bencherki 2017 makes action pre-individual, “logically prior to any individual” (LIT-1901, p. 777), and immediately qualifies it: action “is not chronologically prior” to beings; “individuations continue into each other ceaselessly” (p. 781; THEORY-1285). That is a qualified priority of the kind this claim’s last clause asks for. It is weaker than “neither is prior”: the relation (action) is given an explanatory priority over the relata that the claim does not grant. Bencherki, Brummans and Vézy drop the qualification (“there are no already-constituted human beings prior to communication/becoming”, LIT-1902, p. 1357), which puts them nearer A10’s “pure structure-first ontology” than to this claim, though their priority is of process, not of structure.

Note of 2026-11-01: being a constituent is fixed by the configuration a part enters
Baumgartner and Casini (NOTE-1490, p. 16; THEORY-1294) define a part’s constitutive relevance to a phenomenon as “an extrinsic property of that pair, which depends on whether Φi is contained in a constituting set”: a part is a constituent only as a member of a redundancy-free set that no cause can decouple from the whole, and “pairwise constitutive dependencies cannot be isolated from their context”. That is this claim’s “what an entity is, is partly fixed by the constraints on the configurations … it can enter” for one role, being a constituent. The paper also says what kind of evidence fixes it: no single manipulation, only the repeated failure to decouple, which is abductive. If the claim wants a criterion for when constraints constitute rather than characterize (QUESTION-284), this is one worked answer for one relation. Same structure, not shown same relation: the mechanists’ relata are behaviours of parts, and their constraint is causal coupling, not a constraint on admissible configurations.
