The claim
Viability theory (THEORY-134) measures persistence relative to a constraint set K fixed independently of the dynamics, and it does not supply K. The will-organization line runs into this at its weakest step. ARG-007’s mapping premise gives “no non-arbitrary way to choose the maintenance constraints”, and “‘precarious’ is relative to that choice”. CLAIM-079 ends: “Who fixes the constraint set is the open mapping question.”
For an argument the record answers who fixes it: a decision does. What counts as the same claim persisting is given by codes, by versions that keep a code, and by supersession that names a successor. These were set by ADR-032 and are amended by later decisions. CLAIM-185’s persistence, and so its anchoring, is persistence relative to that stipulated K.
This bears on ARG-007 in a limited way. It is an existing case where K is fixed explicitly, in a public, amendable decision, rather than left implicit. It does not show that the choice is non-arbitrary. It shows that K is chosen, and where the choice is recorded. For an agent, the analogous move would be to treat the constraint set as something an organization decides and revises, not something an analyst discovers. Whether that transfers is open.
Holling’s distinction (THEORY-132) gives the cost side. Managing a system for constancy can erode its resilience. A record that enforces identity strictly maximizes constancy, and may thereby reduce the argument’s capacity to reframe. That is the risk CLAIM-181 and CLAIM-184 name from the grammar and from entrenchment.
What it does not say
- It does not say the record’s K is the right one. Viability does not establish what ought to persist (CLAIM-075), and a stipulated K does not either. A claim can persist, perfectly anchored, and be wrong.
- It does not say an argument is an agent, or that its record is a self-maintaining organization. The record’s grammar is maintained from outside, in luria’s repository and by the owner. Aubin’s K constrains a state space given in advance; the record’s K is partly constitutive, since it defines what the objects are. The mapping is partial.
- It does not answer ARG-007’s mapping premise for agents.
