Bencherki & Iliadis (2021), LIT-1922, proposition 2 and manuscript pp. 14–17, read in NOTE-1483. Bencherki (2017), LIT-1901, p. 780, read in NOTE-1482.
What was actually shown
Nothing was tested.
Bencherki & Iliadis argue, after Simondon, that the scaling-up problem in the communicative constitution of organization “is not a matter of sequential physical steps (individual people first and then a collective) nor is it a synthesis”. Levels of informational abstraction coexist, “in the same way that the DNA of a single cell exists and is as real as the human individual to whom it belongs” (ms. pp. 14–15). One action can reorder several levels at once: a synaptic chemical deficit changes a person’s behaviour and an organization’s human-resources work (ms. p. 17). Proposition 2 reads: “An employee is not prior to the organization, nor is the organization an abstraction of its employees; they each exist fully and simultaneously.”
Bencherki (2017): “I am not, as a human being, anterior to society; at any moment, I am contemporaneous to each of my cells and to the whole universe” (p. 780).
The illustration is a meeting excerpt in which a subcommittee’s ordering spreads to a council through sheets, a calendar and a website.
The parent paper (LIT-1902) draws the conclusion. “individuation takes place concurrently at different ‘levels,’ rather than scaling up from the individual to the collective”; the scaling question “vanishes the moment communication is viewed eventfully” (p. 1364). It cites Bencherki & Iliadis for treating cross-level action as “a processual continuum” (p. 1351).
What this does not say
- That there is no aggregation. It offers a description on which aggregation is not the question. Whether some organizational outcomes are better explained as aggregates (votes, market totals) is not addressed.
- What fixes a level. Domains are distinguished “for practical purposes” by their internal ordering. Whose purposes, and how two analysts would agree, is not said. CLAIM-405 holds that an individuation is well defined only once its criterion is fixed.
- That coexistence is observed. The cell-to-organization example is a thought experiment. The meeting excerpt shows one ordering spreading, not two levels changing at once.
Connections to the record’s own argument
Added 2026-10-31 by a pass connecting the readings of Bencherki, Brummans & Vézy 2024 and the works it leans on to the record’s lines. Analogies are marked as such.
Pragmatic transport
- QUESTION-130. Not an answer: coexisting levels that propagation reorders are state evolution, with a connection the analyst chooses.
Distributed agency and individuation
- CLAIM-526 answers it. CLAIM-388 is the record’s case of a closed level that is an aggregate.
- QUESTION-284: individuation by internal ordering instead of a boundary.
- CLAIM-474: rejecting stages here is about entities, not achievements.
Will-organization, organizational affect and authenticity
- CLAIM-080: coexisting levels allow a given agent without deriving one.
