The claim

The owner, at U17: “how about meaning, judgement, and contextuality? maybe part of what we’ve elucidated is that normative judgements necessarily rely on contexts and relations?” At U18: “so maybe something like a frame/order/scale/perspectival-relative normative realism?”

A17’s statement: “Normative judgment is contextually constituted and relationally indexed, without necessarily being arbitrary or merely subjective.” And its principle of indexed judgment: “each kind of judgment has an associated relation that must be specified for the judgment to be well-defined”.

The claim has two parts.

  1. Indexing. “Is this process functioning correctly?” is, in A17’s words, “incomplete until we specify what organization the process serves and what function it is supposed to perform.” The relata are those of TERM-059: frame, order (organizational and reflective, kept apart as A18 asked), scale, perspective and standard.
  2. Not relative. Once the relata are fixed the verdict is a fact about the case. A17: “an action may objectively undermine the viability of a particular organization under specified physical conditions. The conclusion depends on a relational standard, but the physical consequences are not a matter of preference.” This is the first of A18’s three realist conditions, “truth conditions independent of the current judgment”.

What the record already held

Each part was in the record for one kind of judgment:

  • Individuation. A sufficient statistic is sufficient for a target, so no partition is universal (CLAIM-152), and “Given a target, the criteria decide, and can be wrong.” That is both parts for boundaries.
  • Function. Bickhard’s function is relative to the system served, “which is why a parasite’s gut is functional for the parasite and dysfunctional for the host” (THEORY-220). A17’s tumor and host, and A19’s host and parasite, are THEORY-220’s own example.
  • Viability. It licenses “conditional functional judgment only” (CLAIM-075). The judgment is indexed to an organization, and it does not say what ought to persist.
  • Meaning and standing. A speech act’s significance is the change it makes to commitments and entitlements, kept score of from each perspective (THEORY-665); its effect on the context is part of its meaning (THEORY-162); institutional statuses carry deontic powers in a context C (THEORY-625). A17’s promise is the case: whether it binds depends on standing and context, and whether it was kept is not subjective.

What the exchange added is the general form: the same two parts for normative judgment as such.

What it does not say

A17’s table, kept as it was given:

ClaimImplication
Contextual applicationDifferent circumstances can warrant different judgments
Relational constitutionThe relevant property exists partly in virtue of relations among entities
Standpoint dependenceEvaluation may require identifying whose functioning, reasons, or interests matter
Normative relativismNo context-transcending standard can adjudicate between standpoints

A17: “The first three do not logically entail the fourth.” This claim holds the first three and does not hold the fourth. It does not deny the fourth either. Whether some conflicts between standpoints have objectively better resolutions is A18’s realist thesis, which A18 says “is plausible but requires a much stronger argument” (QUESTION-129). A17 adds that “a universal principle can itself be relational”, so indexing is compatible with general principles.

Further:

  • It does not say every normative property is relational. A17’s own statement is “often”. Part (a) of the defeat condition is the test.
  • It does not say context-dependence is contextuality. A17: “We should not derive strong formal contextuality merely from the fact that meaning and value are contextual.” A failure of global consistency is a further question (THEORY-012, CLAIM-038).
  • It does not say who fixes the relata. A18: “We cannot simply let an evaluator choose whichever frame makes a preferred verdict true.” The claim’s second part needs only that, once chosen, the relata leave the verdict to the case. That the choice of relata can itself be wrong is the third realist condition, not claimed.
  • It does not ground the standard. CLAIM-075 stands: a verdict relative to an organization’s viability says nothing about whether the organization ought to persist.

Note of 2026-10-21: the same structure for individuation

A8 §9 and A9 §9 of the exchange of 2026-10-20 reached this claim’s structure for individuation, without citing it (“Observer-relative need not mean subjective”). That is filed as CLAIM-405.

Note of 2026-10-28: THEORY-162 corroborates

The status review of this date moved THEORY-162 from grounds to corroborated_by (ADR-058). It is one of four illustrations of the general form, beside THEORY-220, THEORY-665 and THEORY-625, and the claim does not stand on dynamic semantics; THEORY-665 already carries the point for speech acts.

Note of 2026-10-31: both parts for categories in use, and a perspectivism with only the first

Two of the readings filed on this date take opposite sides of this claim’s two parts.

  • Tsoukas and Chia hold both, for the categories an organization applies. “The application of a concept is always a normative act insofar as it presupposes background knowledge” (LIT-1913, p. 574). That is indexing. And “The indeterminacy of extension does not indicate arbitrariness. We are still able to make intelligent judgements about problematic cases” (p. 574; THEORY-1279). That is the second part. Their example is Hart’s statute against wheeled vehicles in a park. It adds rules in use to the kinds of judgment for which the record already held both parts: boundaries, function and viability.
  • Bencherki, Brummans and Vézy hold only the first. “Agency is a matter of perspective or perspectivism … Who or what has agency is a premature question” (LIT-1902, p. 1357). Describing action from a human starting point is “an ‘agential cut’”, an analytical choice. Nothing in the paper says that an attribution, once its perspective is fixed, can be false. NOTE-1484 and THEORY-1277 found the same gap against CLAIM-405. In this claim’s terms the paper indexes agency and stops before the step that would keep the index from being relativism.
