The claim
The owner, at U6, asked A6 to “double click on” Barad’s ethico-onto-epistem-ology and on the sentence A4 had given as hers: “practices of knowing are simultaneously practices that participate in the world’s becoming.” A4 §6’s example was diagnosis: the boundary between a diagnosed and an undiagnosed patient “may affect treatment, institutional access, insurance, personal identity, and subsequent physiological and social trajectories”, constrained by biology but “not exhausted by the biological facts”.
The first half. If an apparatus constitutes some of the objects it is
used on (CLAIM-476), then choosing it is not a neutral preliminary.
A6 §4: “the practices by which we establish what counts as knowledge are
themselves consequential interventions in the world.” A10 §6: “the choice
and maintenance of an apparatus can itself be an object of ethical
evaluation, rather than a morally neutral preliminary to inquiry.” A7 §5
found the norm-constituting case in luria’s constitution example, where a
BOUNDARY can override a PRACTICE: “Which distinctions become
first-class entities? Which constraints can override others? Who
authorizes a change? What remains invisible because it doesn’t fit a
declared category?” The record’s own version of the last is QUESTION-072:
whether coding some contributors’ moves and leaving others’ as unfiled
turns distributes credibility among them.
The second half. A6 §4 pressed where Barad does not: “an agential cut might exclude a possibility, but exclusion is not inherently unjust. Every useful distinction excludes something. A scientific instrument that distinguishes one spectral band from another necessarily excludes other bands from its measurement.” So the question “concerns which exclusions matter, to whom, according to which standards, and with what consequences.” That is CLAIM-363’s form, a normative judgment well defined only once its standard, scale and context are fixed and then capable of being false, which A6 named as “a possible bridge between Barad’s ethical commitments and a more explicit theory of normative judgment.” A6: “Barad gives us an ontology of consequential differentiation, while a theory of normativity must still explain how those differences become grounds for obligations.”
What it does not say
- Not that Barad holds the second half. It is A6’s pressure on her, and her text is unread here (LIT-1657).
- Not that every apparatus choice is a moral question. It says the choice is open to evaluation, which may find nothing that matters.
- Not which exclusions the record’s own grammar makes, or whether any is wrong. QUESTION-072 asks one; none is answered here.
Note of 2026-10-27 (later): the first half’s source, at second hand
The two readings of 2026-10-27 give Barad’s own statements of the first half. Faye and Jaksland quote her: “apparatuses … enact what matters and what is excluded from mattering” (2007, 148; NOTE-1220). Jaksland quotes the source of the exclusion: an arrangement that makes “position” determinate “will, by necessity, always produce its constitutive exclusion (for example, ‘momentum’)” (Barad 2010, 253; NOTE-1230), and cites Rouse on Barad’s science as “inherently normative” (note 18). So the exclusion Barad means is complementarity’s, generalized. Neither reading addresses the second half, which remains A6’s pressure on her.
Note of 2026-10-27 (later still): Bowker and Star
A11 found the empirical tradition for this claim’s first half in Bowker and Star (LIT-1631, unread): classification infrastructures become invisible by becoming routine, and what they leave residual has consequences. It asked the claim’s question of luria: “Which distinctions become easier to make because the apparatus recognizes them, and which distinctions become harder to make because the apparatus has no place for them?”, and added that “Extensibility allows a category to be added. It does not guarantee that someone notices the missing category, has authority to add it, or can do so without costly consequences”. That is CLAIM-419’s limit (“whether every such move is caught is not shown”) made a question of who can act, which is QUESTION-072’s.
Note of 2026-10-30: what holds it back
Its first half rests on CLAIM-476, which is Proposed: no consequence of an apparatus constituting its objects has been shown beyond CLAIM-469’s operational facts, and QUESTION-284’s criterion for telling constitution from characterization is Open.
