The claim
“The present paper therefore assumes an independently defensible candidate agent and asks how its practical efficacy is organized.” It “presupposes rather than derives the relevant agent” (Section 7.4).
What it does not say
That any particular institution is an agent. If Northstar is not, “the same relations can still be described as institutional coordination without attributing a collective will”. Whether it is, is QUESTION-009.
Note of 2026-10-31: a reading that denies the supposition, and keeps using it
Bencherki, Brummans and Vézy (LIT-1902; THEORY-1280) deny what this claim supposes. “There are no already-constituted human beings prior to communication/becoming” (p. 1357). “Who or what has agency is a premature question” (p. 1357). Agency “happens before any becoming process can be recognized as an individual agent” (p. 1357).
It does not reach the will account, for three reasons.
- The claim is a supposition, and the account is indexed to it. It asks how a given agent’s efficacy is organized. A theory of how agents come to be recognized would answer QUESTION-009, which this claim leaves open. It would not undermine CLAIM-027.
- The parent’s own analysis restores the agent. The reanalysis attributes knowledge, surprise and discomfort to Robert. It concedes that it “still bears traces of entitative thinking” (p. 1364). The supposition is hard to do without even for a paper that rejects it.
- The neighbouring readings are compatible with it. Bencherki and Iliadis (THEORY-1277) treat persons and organizations as coexisting levels, “they each exist fully and simultaneously”. That allows a given agent at one level without deriving it. Tsoukas and Chia’s becoming is carried by “actors … reweaving their webs of beliefs and habits” (LIT-1913, p. 575; THEORY-1284), which is the agent this claim supposes.
Where the parent does bear is on the outward route, QUESTION-365: a conflict the agent settles by forming a collective crosses the boundary this claim draws.
