Why it is set aside

Every attempt to answer it in the exchange produced the permissiveness objection (CLAIM-010). The paper’s move was to stop deriving agency and assume it: “It presupposes rather than derives the relevant agent” (Section 7.4). The question stays real, and three adequacy standards the paper keeps apart (constitutive, explanatory, agentive) say what an answer would need.

Note of 2026-10-12: typed partial answers

Two THEORYs now carry answered_by edges. THEORY-065 (Korsgaard): we constitute ourselves joint agents by observing the rules of normative unification together, though how a group does so is not worked out. THEORY-131 (French): a CID Structure makes a corporation a non-eliminable agent, unlike a mob.

Note of 2026-10-14: a comparative criterion, not a threshold

Watson (LIT-990), read in NOTE-747, gives a criterion of a different shape. Coordination counts when it lets the parts resolve more of their mutual constraints than they would without it. That says when a whole is more agential than its parts, relative to a chosen decomposition into parts with given goals. It declines any absolute line “regardless of whether the parts, or the system as a whole, are considered to pass some absolute threshold”. So it is not a criterion for when there is an additional agent, and read as one it changes the question rather than answering it. The criterion is filed as THEORY-232, which declares no relation to this question for that reason.
