The claim
A16: “The classic Ott–Grebogi–Yorke method demonstrates that small, carefully timed control interventions can stabilize selected trajectories of a chaotic system.” The owner: “that’s very wu-wei” (U17).
The method (LIT-1997) waits for the state’s own wandering to bring it near an unstable periodic orbit embedded in the attractor. It then makes small, bounded parameter perturbations that put the state on the orbit’s stable manifold. Little force is spent because the dynamics do the moving. Shinbrot et al. (LIT-1972) add targeting, one well-placed nudge that uses sensitivity to reach a region quickly.
Read this way, wu-wei is not the absence of control. A17: control “that no longer needs to fight what it governs”. A18 §2: restraint is part of an effective policy. Effortlessness then has three sources (A18 §4):
- No conflict to override. CLAIM-162’s synchronized valuations, with no dynamical mechanism claimed.
- Conflict amortized. CLAIM-358’s learned local accommodation.
- Conflict met as it arises by feedback small because it is well timed and well coupled, the OGY case.
They may be reported alike and differ in mechanism.
What it does not say
- That OGY’s effects persist. A18 §7 claimed “large and persistent self-formative effects”. OGY holds an unstable orbit, so when the control stops the trajectory leaves it at the orbit’s own rate. Effects that outlast the intervention come from switching basins or from drift of a slow mode. OGY-style wu-wei is small control that never reaches zero.
- That this is what wu-wei means in early Chinese thought. The record holds no Daoist text, and its one work on effortless action, Bruya’s Effortless Attention (LIT-910), is Unavailable. Slingerland (LIT-1994) is the reading to check it against.
- That small control is autonomous. Low effort is not ownership: a remote operator can steer cheaply too (CLAIM-354; CLAIM-533).
Note of 2026-11-03: its sources are unread
Ott, Grebogi and Yorke, Shinbrot et al. and Slingerland were all looked for and are Unavailable, so both the claim’s formal instance and the source named in its defeater rest on unread works. OGY is one of PRL’s milestone letters; if the APS makes those free it should be Unfetched.
