The claim
“A manipulator could alter an agent’s regulatory architecture. A coercive institution could impose durable governing relations.” Velleman’s objection to Frankfurt (LIT-292) applies to higher-order organizations as much as to higher-order desires.
Note of 2026-10-27: grounded in the objection it applies
The status review of this date (ADR-057) found this Active claim grounded in THEORY-120, Frankfurt’s account of ownership, which is Proposed. A disclaimer does not rest on the account it declines to settle. What the body applies is Velleman’s objection to Frankfurt (LIT-292, read in full), generalized from desires to organizations, so that is now its ground.
Note of 2026-10-31: the same limit in a process account of authorship
Bencherki (2017; LIT-1901, read in NOTE-1482; THEORY-1285) gives an account of how an action comes to count as a person’s or an organization’s. “A being only possesses its components from a particular perspective: their contribution to its individuation process; possession is never complete or univocal” (p. 782). “Deciding on an author is the outcome of individuation, not its starting point” (p. 786). That explains attribution as this claim’s account explains efficacy: by what an action is allowed to contribute to. Bencherki meets this claim’s limit. His verdict that the army’s taking of the daycare work is “usurpation” (pp. 791–792) has force only if the spouses’ authorship was real before the army’s attribution denied it. The account does not supply that standard (THEORY-1285, “What this does not say”). This claim’s disclaimer holds, in another literature: explaining how action comes to be counted as someone’s does not settle whose it is.
No status, title or warrant changes.
Note of 2026-11-01: attribution and efficacy come apart in Metzinger’s mental autonomy
Metzinger (LIT-1941, LIT-1942) separates what makes a thought effective from what makes it the person’s, in both directions.
- Owned and not controlled. Mind-wandering has “ownership without agency” (LIT-1941, p. 272): the thoughts are phenomenally one’s own while no control of them is exercised.
- Attributed and not caused. The return of control is represented as self-caused, “I generated this insight myself!”, even when “really triggered by unconscious events”, to keep the self-model continuous (p. 291; THEORY-1298).
- Whose, settled elsewhere. A process “only becomes part of a personal-level process by being functionally integrated into … the ‘epistemic agent model’ (EAM), and by being embedded into a highly specific sociocultural context” of mutual ascription (p. 296).
So in this literature the person’s thought is fixed by a representation and a social practice, not by what was effective, which is this claim’s disclaimer in another form. It does not settle whose the will is either: LIT-1945 adds that the standard of self-attribution is installed by caregivers before memory (pp. 20–21), the issue QUESTION-364 takes up.
No status, title or warrant changes.
Note of 2026-11-02: Kane, registered
In the exchange “Assess SDT Coverage” (2026-11-02) the owner asked about Kane’s libertarian sourcehood (U15). Kane’s ultimate responsibility is the historical condition that would answer this disclaimer’s question. The record held Kane only second-hand (THEORY-316, LIT-1867, LIT-1045, NOTE-548, NOTE-856). The Significance of Free Will (LIT-1985) and “Libertarianism” (LIT-1984) are now registered, unread.
A15 drew a distinction the record already observes. “The self-formation thesis: Agents can participate in shaping the dispositions and governing relationships through which their future actions become possible and effective.” “The libertarian sourcehood thesis: Some of that participation must be undetermined, and its indeterminacy must be compatible with a kind of control sufficient for ultimate responsibility.” The record holds the first (TERM-023’s transformation; CLAIM-025) and, by this claim, does not settle the second. The authenticity line, set aside on 2026-10-05, is where it belongs. The entry a Kanean would contest is CLAIM-356 (“exogenous origin does not disqualify a goal”). It is about goals and not responsibility, so there is no contradiction, but a theorist of ultimate responsibility denies its analogue for responsibility. The owner’s link between Kane and chaos is CLAIM-533.
The claim is unchanged.
Note of 2026-11-03: Kane, read first-hand
Kane’s “Libertarianism” (LIT-1984, NOTE-1518) states ultimate responsibility in his own words: “to be ultimately responsible for an action, an agent must be responsible for anything that is a sufficient reason, cause or motive for the action’s occurring” (p. 36), and asks whether “the sources of our wills” can “be completely traced backwards to something over which we had no control, such as … social conditioning or hidden controllers” (p. 37). That is the historical condition this disclaimer leaves open, in the formation sense of TERM-100.
The claim is unchanged.
