The claim
Built from TERM-006 and TERM-012, and defended against Velleman with four ownership conditions and a manipulation test (A263).
Why it is deferred
A274 found the ownership conditions insufficient: “A sophisticated manipulator could engineer all four.” The owner agreed at U77 and tried to fork the conversation upstream of where authenticity entered; the fork did not hold, which is why the retraction had to happen in-band. In the record it is a status change on the members of the line, and CLAIM-104 and CLAIM-096, which rest on this, are deferred with it.
Note of 2026-10-12: grounds now held (status unchanged)
The authenticity line was set aside at the audit of 2026-10-05 because “ownership criteria remain insufficiently defended”. The record has since read four works that bear on exactly this claim, and they are added as grounds:
- THEORY-054: a regulation is autonomous “to the degree it is integrated with one’s other values and needs”, not by the order of the attitude that endorses it.
- THEORY-047: a value taken in under controlling conditions is introjected, not integrated, so the history of how it was acquired fixes how autonomous acting on it is.
- THEORY-029: a higher-order attitude cannot make a motive one’s own by its order alone (Velleman’s regress).
- THEORY-040: a condition stated only in present structure is met by a manipulated agent, so a historical condition is needed.
Together they support this claim’s “arise through, remain integrated with” against the hierarchical account (THEORY-120) that CLAIM-022 and CLAIM-047 rest on. All four are Proposed, and THEORY-040 notes that no historical condition in the record is shown to escape its own objection. The claim stays Deferred. Reopening the line is the owner’s decision; the synthesis review only found that the grounds it lacked are now held.
Note of 2026-10-18: graded integration returns, and a candidate repair
The exchange of 2026-10-17 came back to this claim’s ground several times, and cited the claim only at the end.
- Second appearance: THEORY-054 at the center of a proposed paper. A14: “The biggest discovery from the second audit is THEORY-054.” A15: “THEORY-054 now anchors the graded-autonomy argument”. This claim had already made graded integration against endorsement order its own, and deferred it. Neither turn cited it.
- Third appearance: graded ownership from the control side. The owner, at U9: “controllability of a system isn’t binary, and neither is sensitivity to perturbation. I’m wondering if our account equips us to make concrete statements about gradations (perhaps even gradients/spectra?) of freedom of will/autonomy”. Filed as CLAIM-354. A9’s measures are of influence, not ownership: “It measures influence, not the normative validity of endorsement.” So the ownership criteria this claim lacks are not supplied.
- A35’s split is close to this claim’s three conditions. A35, on the owner’s U35 thesis that an external objective can become the training organization’s goal (CLAIM-356): “the key is to distinguish goal provenance, goal realization, and goal governance”. Provenance, realization and governance sit near “arise through, remain integrated with, and are answerable to”.
- A candidate repair of “integrated”. The owner, at U45: “‘authenticity’ should be treated as an organizational achievement characterized by non-domination of subcomponents.” Filed as CLAIM-362, an alternative reading of this claim’s middle condition, with A45’s objection that low supervisory cost cannot show non-domination as CLAIM-364. The manipulation defeater this claim states is not met by either.
The status stays Deferred. Reopening the line is the owner’s call.
