Van Lange and Bergmann (2026), LIT-2002, pp. 547–555. Read in NOTE-1537.

What was actually shown

Nothing new. The paper assembles results from laboratory social dilemmas, minimal-group studies and field work, and proposes the stages. Its claims, with page references, are in the note. Two are worth separating:

  • “need not imply … any harmful behaviour towards outgroups” (p. 553). Favouritism is not harm.
  • “the same processes that can establish ingroup cooperation can also fuel intergroup conflict” (p. 554). Conformity and peer punishment push members to invest in a conflict.

What this does not say

  • That groups fail to persist, or go extinct. The model is about cooperation and conflict between groups, and CLAIM-547’s coexistence of groups is a further target.
  • That the cross-group-dyad remedy works. It is proposed, untested.
