The claim
The record says “realized” in two places where it matters: CLAIM-522 (“where maintenance is realized”) and CLAIM-515’s third question (“what mechanisms realize them, shown by interventions that discriminate implementations”). The constitution debate after Craver forces a choice between two readings.
- Produced through: diachronic, and shown by intervention. In CASE-189, ċ₁ = 3c₂²/(1 + c₂²) − (1 + d₁)c₁. Removing the c₂ → c₁ production changes ċ₁ at once and c₁ only over the following interval. On Baumgartner and Gebharter’s own criterion (M**), a variable is a cause when some intervention on it at t changes the other at a later t′ (NOTE-1493, p. 17). So the pathway is a cause of the later capacities. Interventions on it can be surgical: bottom-up interventions “may well exist” (their footnote 8). CLAIM-522’s separation, disabling the pathway inside the boundary or interrupting the controller outside it, is of this kind. So is CASE-163’s identification of a mechanism from probes within a catalog. The fat-handedness result does not reach them (ARG-050).
- Consists in: synchronic, and not shown by intervention. If the capacity at t is what its parts are doing at t, every cause of a change in it is also a cause of a change in some part along another path. No finite set of manipulations then tells a model in which the capacity consists in those parts from one in which the experimenter merely moves both (THEORY-1288). The inference is abductive, from repeated failure to find a cause that spares the parts (THEORY-1294). Or it follows from one intervention that is surgical within each level, given that realization is simultaneous and that parthood and levels are already settled (THEORY-1293). CASE-189 has a dependence of this kind: the coupling L(c) is a function of the capacities, so no intervention on c leaves L alone.
- The line moves with the time scale. Both negative results and the positive one draw the line between causation and constitution at simultaneity: “Simultaneous changes cannot be causally related” (NOTE-1494, p. 6). CLAIM-480’s chain gives a dependence that falls on either side depending on the description. If the interior x₂ equilibrates fast, the boundary sees the memoryless coupling E_eff, a change at the boundary is matched at once in the interior, and the dependence is synchronic. If x₂ relaxes slowly, eliminating it leaves a memory kernel, and the interior’s response follows the boundary’s change, as a cause’s effect follows it. So whether a part’s dependence on its whole is constitution or causation, in the debate’s own sense, is fixed by the time resolution at which the description treats a response as instantaneous, not by the system alone. This is CLAIM-405’s criterion-relativity applied to the causation–constitution line.
Why it matters for the record
- CLAIM-522 stands as stated. Its conclusion is about where a cause sits relative to a declared boundary, which is reading 1.
- CLAIM-515’s third question should say which reading it means. Read as 1, “shown by interventions that discriminate implementations” is right. Read as 2, it is not available even in principle, and the question becomes which abductive or principled route applies.
- QUESTION-284 gets a partial answer for one relation. Part–whole constitution is not shown by any finite set of manipulations; a second-order pattern, or simultaneity with settled parthood, can support it. Neither route supplies the boundary.
What it does not say
- That constitution is unknowable. Abduction and horizontal surgicality are routes to it; they are just not first-order intervention data.
- That the record’s organizations have constituents in the mechanists’ sense. Whether a maintained organization’s capacity “consists in” its production network at a time is a further question. The record’s constructions are stated as dynamics, which is reading 1.
- That the time-scale point refutes the debate. Its authors assume simultaneity as an idealization of the macroscopic sciences. Part 3 says the idealization is a choice of resolution, and that a verdict of constitution is relative to it. Krickel 2018 (LIT-1925, unread) reportedly reads mutual manipulability causally, between a component and temporal parts of the phenomenon, which would be the same move from the other side. Nothing here rests on that report.
