The claim
The criterion, as reported. On Craver’s mutual-manipulability account, a component X’s activity φ is constitutively relevant to a mechanism S’s behaviour ψ when three conditions hold:
- X is part of S;
- some ideal intervention on X’s φ-ing changes S’s ψ-ing (bottom up);
- some ideal intervention on S’s ψ-ing changes X’s φ-ing (top down).
This is the criterion as LIT-832 records it from reviews, and as Craver, Glennan and Povich’s abstract presupposes in defining constitutive relevance as being “parts of the mechanism responsible for that phenomenon” (LIT-1931). The texts that state it were not reached.
The pair. This is CLAIM-522’s.
- In system A, the capacities maintain themselves: ċ = P(c) − D(c).
- In system B, an outside controller reads c and supplies u = P(c): ċ = −D(c) + u.
Take ψ to be “c is maintained”, with recovery after damage. Take X to be A’s production pathway, and in B the controller.
- Bottom up. Disabling A’s pathway ends maintenance, and so does disabling B’s controller. Raising either’s output raises c. Since the equations are the same with P(c) in place of u, the responses are the same.
- Top down. Intervening on c, for example damage that lowers it, changes P(c) in A and u = P(c) in B by the same amount. Either’s activity changes.
So conditions 2 and 3 hold for both, and with the same responses. Only condition 1 differs, and it differs because a boundary has been drawn with the controller outside. Craver and Bechtel’s other marker does not help either. A component, as against a background condition, is one “interactively integrated into the system” (LIT-1928, p. 553, n. 10). The controller reads c and acts on it, so it is integrated in any sense the paper gives the word (THEORY-1287).
The reading. “Where is maintenance realized?” is a question of constitutive relevance. But the experiments that establish constitutive relevance answer it only through the parthood the question already fixes. When the phenomenon is “c is maintained”, the controller is a component of the mechanism for it, as the virus becomes one when the question is how it killed the general (LIT-1928, p. 557). When the phenomenon is “S maintains c”, the boundary is written into the explanandum. So CLAIM-522’s “relative to a declared boundary” is not a gap in that claim that constitutive relevance would fill. It is the input constitutive relevance itself needs.
What it does not say
- That no criterion can draw the boundary. One candidate is closure in TERM-070’s sense: a producer counts as inside when it is itself maintained by what it produces. In B the controller’s own persistence does not depend on c. In A, if P is realized by constraints that c maintains, it does. CLAIM-522’s one-variable model has no term for the producer’s own maintenance, so it cannot test this. A construction that could would intervene one level down, on what maintains the producer. Whether that is a constitutive criterion, or only another declared boundary, is open.
- That mutual manipulability is wrong. On its own terms the parthood condition is part of the criterion. The claim says only that the manipulability half cannot be the thing that answers CLAIM-522.
- That this is new to the debate. Critics argue that the account confuses constitution with causation. Leuridan (LIT-1929, unread, by its abstract) holds that under Woodward’s interventionism constitutive relevance threatens to imply causal relevance, and that parthood as spatiotemporal inclusion meets a counterexample from endosymbiosis. Baumgartner and Gebharter (LIT-1934) conclude that constitution gets only abductive evidence. This pair is a case of the first point: the outside relation is plainly causal and still meets both manipulability conditions. It is also a case of the second: only parthood is left to separate them. If those works make the point in this form, this claim is their point applied to the record’s pair, and it is filed for the application.
- That causal betweenness settles it. If constitutive relevance is causal betweenness, as LIT-1931’s abstract says, then a controller that closes the loop between damage and recovery lies causally between them too. That is a conjecture from an abstract.
