Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-02 at the owner’s request, as one of the works filling out the record’s coverage of Prigogine’s dissipative-structure programme.
Unavailable because no lawful full text was reachable, so it is not read and
no NOTE is filed. No table of contents was found. What follows is only what
the catalogue records show and what read works say about the book.
What read works cite from it.
- The Nobel lecture (LIT-516) cites it as “my recent monograph in collaboration with G. Nicolis” for the original references and properties of the Brusselator (“See especially Chapter VII”), for bifurcation theory, and for “many examples” of coherent structures in chemistry and biology.
- Zhabotinsky’s Scholarpedia review of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction (LIT-531) cites it twice: for the statement that oscillations can arise in a macroscopic medium only when the system is “sufficiently far” from equilibrium, and for the statement that detailed balance forbids oscillations near equilibrium.
- Cross and Hohenberg (LIT-527, §I.B) cite it as the source of the name “dissipative structures” for macroscopic structure in steady state under constant non-equilibrium conditions.
Priority for a deeper reading: medium. It is the fullest statement of the stochastic side of the programme, the part the Nobel lecture compresses into its §5. The lecture is enough for what the record currently asks of the programme: the definition, the scope of the stability results, and the canonical systems.
