Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-768.
- One scenario at every level. Neural, motor, mental, dyadic and group functions are performed by functional units: lower-level elements synchronized for as long as a task needs them, then disassembled and regrouped.
- Synchronization is not convergence. It is “the binding of dynamics”, which “does not necessarily involve performing the same action at the same time, but rather may involve compensatory dynamics”, as in a band.
- Three assembly routes. Units assemble through structural links, through elements being salient at the same time (by attention or “external factors”), and through mutual constraint.
- Two transitions upward. Either a synchronized ensemble becomes one element of the level above, or a pattern of synchronization, an order parameter, does. In the second case “it is the type of synchronization rather than the particular subset of elements” that matters.
- Drive and coupling alike. Group members “become synchronized, either through their mutual influence or through their common response to an external signal (e.g., a leader, a perceived threat or an opportunity)”. The paper treats both as the same kind of unit.
- A proposed measure. Treat synchronized pairs within a time window as functional links, and analyse the network. This is done for neural systems; for minds and groups it is a future direction.
- Its own status. The model “is in its nascent stage and thus should be viewed as a heuristic for research agendas”.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-12 for QUESTION-053 and read on 2026-10-14 in NOTE-768. The registration was wrong in one respect. The paper does not state the synchronized-convergence option of THEORY-126. Its synchronization includes complementary roles, and its functional unit is a coordinated structure that performs a task. That puts it nearer THEORY-125’s integration, though it never asks whether such a unit is a subject of states. It is best held as a third option the question does not list: a coordinated configuration that is neither aggregate convergence nor a group subject. It offers no case to decide between them.
It also bears on QUESTION-063, as an instance of the conflation that question names. Its functional-link measure would count members driven by one cue as linked. No THEORY is filed. Its claims are programmatic and rest on cited work, and its sharpest point, the broad definition of synchronization, is a definition.
