Contribution

The only source the record has for the timeline of CASE-100, with first- hand accounts from the redub’s two creators, the animated series’ co- showrunners (Eric and Julia Lewald), and two other early web-video makers (Eric Fensler, Aaron Yonda). It also gives Rosecrans Baldwin’s context and quotes Kinberg and Vinnie Jones at second hand.

Key insight

The timeline is solid, and the causal link to the film is not. Everyone interviewed is on the creators’ side of the story. The only production voice is a one-line quote from another outlet saying the line was added in reshoots by the director, which dates the addition but does not say why.

Assumptions

  • An oral history: edited and condensed interviews (“Interviews have been edited and condensed”), with connecting narrative by Siegel. Memory, 18 years on.

Key results

  • Making it. November 2005, in Chicago’s Humboldt Park: bored, inspired by Fensler’s G.I. Joe PSA redubs and the “Old School Afternoon” mashup. Edited in Sony Vegas, from a downloaded copy of “The Phoenix Saga” episode 3. Hayes improvised “Yeah, it’s the Juggernaut, bitch!” watching Juggernaut throw Xavier. Nazario voiced most other characters.
  • Posting it. 14 February 2006, on YouTube, Dailymotion and (Nazario thinks) Vimeo. “I think we hit in the millions.”
  • The film. Nazario recalls a TV news segment “about how viral videos and viral memes were affecting Hollywood. And it was Snakes on a Plane and us … they just mentioned the Juggernaut video making it into the new X-Men movie”. He adds: “Word got around that the line was being added.” X-Men: The Last Stand (May 2006) has Juggernaut shout “Don’t you know who I am? I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!”
    • Siegel: “Now-disgraced director Brett Ratner was likely a fan of Nazario and Hayes’s video.”
    • Kinberg (cowriter), to Polygon: “That was a reshoot Ratner line.”
    • Vinnie Jones, to Comic Book Movie: his character’s storyline and dialogue were cut; “they’re writing stuff for you … it never fucking happened”.
  • Afterward. A June 2006 sequel. Killer Mike sampled Jones’s line in “The Juggernaut”. Late 2006 takedowns followed Viacom’s action against YouTube; the duo’s channel (Naztradamix) was removed after their Avatar anime music videos. No revenue: “We had internet clout, but our lives were still the same.” A re-upload has 9 million views. They appeared at ROFLCon (MIT, 2010) and conventions. Nazario now works as an airport ramp agent, Hayes for a cleaning agency.
  • Context. Baldwin, Fensler and Yonda describe 2006 as a brief “Wild West” before platforms commercialized: “There were basically no restraints in 2006.”

Concepts

  • redub / fan dub: replacing a work’s dialogue with new dialogue over the original images.

Connections

  • Giulianotti (NOTE-1244). Not about sport, but the creators fit none of his spectator types cleanly. They are producers of a fan artefact; his taxonomy has no slot for fans who make.
  • Jenkins (LIT-1121, LIT-1143), Unavailable, is the theory of participatory and spreadable media this case would be read against.

Bearing on the record

  • CASE-100. The case lists “production testimony on the decision” as a strengthener. The article supplies the timing (a reshoot) and a public expectation before release, but no testimony on why Ratner added the line. So the case’s caveat stands: circulation is not shown to have caused the decision, though the phrase identity and the timing make borrowing very likely. The case’s date for release (14 February 2006) and conception (November 2005) are confirmed. A note is added to the case.
  • QUESTION-119. The story’s agents are two creators, a mass audience of viewers and quoters, a news segment, and one director. That is A7’s “passing coalition”, and nothing in it is the X-Men fandom acting as such.
  • No ML instruction.

Limitations

  • Journalism. Edited interviews, no sources for the view counts, and the key production quote second-hand.
  • One side of the story. No one from the production was interviewed.

Open questions

  • What did the Polygon interview with Kinberg say in full, and does any production account (Ratner’s, an editor’s, a reshoot call sheet) give the reason for the line? That is the evidence CASE-100 still lacks.
