The question

CLAIM-157 answers QUESTION-035 with a criterion: a combined form is one system while it is a gap-isolated block whose gap beats the Occam factor (CLAIM-154). The unit is the block, not any member (CLAIM-164). Nothing has been measured. A brain is a system where the candidate units are fixed independently, by anatomy, and where joint activity is recorded. The question asks whether the record’s criterion, run there, picks out the anatomical units, at which scale, and for how long.

Why the record needs it

CLAIM-157’s defeat condition asks for blocks and independent marks of unity to come apart in measured cases. Its examples, dancers and firms, have no independent mark. A brain has one. A match would give the criterion its first test that could fail. A mismatch would show where it fails.

What the record holds

  • THEORY-124 runs a test of the same form as CLAIM-154, structure against a covariance-matched null. Within one area neurons “rarely form discrete functional types”, but types appear “when regions are pooled, aligned with anatomy”. So units earn a name at the area scale and not below, and the area’s conditions stay separable without member types. Limit: selectivity profiles, not joint dynamics.
  • THEORY-097: during brief co-ripples, neurons “co-fire more whatever the distance between them”. That is a long-range block lasting about 70 ms, which bears on how long a block lasts. Limit: correlational; 5% co-occurrence.
  • THEORY-088: phase singularities “sit on boundaries between functional regions”, so boundaries show up in the dynamics. Limit: BOLD only, scale chosen on the outcome.
  • THEORY-262 (LIT-998, NOTE-767): neural complexity C_N is low when parts are independent or uniformly dependent and high when small subsets are nearly independent while large ones are integrated, and patchy wiring raises it. LIT-998 was filed as the rival measure to the Occam-priced block test. It is not a rival: C_N is one number for a whole system over fixed components, and it finds no units, boundaries or scale. The point of contact is its oneness condition, that no bipartition yields two independent subsets (zero mutual information), which is CLAIM-157’s gap test at threshold zero, with no Occam factor. Limit: simulation only, and stationary, so it cannot see blocks that last about 70 ms.

What would answer it

The gap and Occam test computed on recorded joint activity, for a stated target, and compared with the anatomical partition and with the timing of transient long-range coupling.

Note of 2026-10-30: THEORY-124 narrowed

The phrase quoted above, that within one area neurons “rarely form discrete functional types”, is no longer THEORY-124’s wording. The status review of 2026-10-30 narrowed THEORY-124 to what Posani et al. measured on the IBL Brainwide Map (selectivity profiles beating a covariance-matched Gaussian null for clustering in only three of about 20 areas, with pooled profiles clustering along anatomy) and promoted it, Active (ADR-065). The wide wording is now carried by THEORY-1196, Proposed, which extends it. The point made above stands on the narrowed, Active entry.
