Gallagher (2000), “Philosophical conceptions of the self: implications for cognitive science”, Trends in Cognitive Sciences 4(1): 14–21, LIT-453, read in NOTE-377 from the preprint.
What was actually shown
Two selves. The minimal self is “a self devoid of temporal extension”, limited to what is “accessible to immediate and present self-consciousness”. The narrative self is “extended in time to include memories of the past and intentions toward the future”. The review presents them as distinct and both relevant to cognitive science; it does not argue that they exhaust the field (C1).
Ownership and agency. The sense of ownership is that it is my body moving or my experience; the sense of agency is that I am the initiator. They coincide in voluntary action and come apart in involuntary movement. Ownership is ecological self-awareness from sensory feedback (Neisser; Gallagher and Marcel). Agency comes from what “precedes action”, with lateralised readiness potentials and supplementary motor area stimulation cited (Haggard and Eimer; Haggard and Magno).
The comparator. On Frith’s model a non-conscious forward model compares efference copy with intention. Patients with thought insertion and delusions of control are reported to show deficits in forward monitoring but not in feedback-based control, with abnormal premovement potentials. Extended to inner speech, failed forward monitoring gives thoughts that are in one’s own stream and do not seem self-generated: ownership without agency. Frith’s patient: “They come from this chap, Chris. They’re his thoughts.”
The immunity principle. Using “I” as subject involves no identification and so cannot misidentify (after Wittgenstein and Shoemaker). Campbell offers thought insertion as a counterexample. Whether it is one is left open, but if a mechanism explains the failure, the working mechanism explains the principle.
What could have come out otherwise. Patients could have shown deficits in feedback-based control as well, which would not separate the two senses. As reported, the deficit is in forward monitoring.
What this does not say
- That the neuroscience is shown here. It is reported from the cited studies, and the reading took the extension to thought on trust.
- That thought insertion is a real exception to immunity. The review leaves it open and cites doubts.
- Which minimal self is meant. The embodied self of newborn imitation (Meltzoff and Moore) and Strawson’s reflective “bare locus of consciousness” differ in whether they are conceptual and conscious, and the review does not say which one the ownership and agency analysis is about.
- That a robot has a minimal self. Tani’s robot, which takes its own state into account only when top-down and bottom-up dynamics conflict, has a momentary self in a functional sense, bought by dropping Strawson’s requirement that the self be a conscious subject. The reading rates that claim weak.
- That the narrative self is the sum of its narratives. Gallagher’s proposal, a self “decentered, distributed and multiplex” that holds its self-deceptions, is asserted in two paragraphs and is not part of this account.
- That the text is the typeset one. The preprint has reference slips (“Walpert”, “Deprati”, Meltzoff and Moore’s dates) that may be corrected in print.

Kalckert & Ehrsson (2012), LIT-1273, read in full in NOTE-993, tested the split directly. A participant’s hidden finger moved a wooden model finger through a rod. In a 2×2 design, with all conditions synchronous and 32 participants:
| condition | ownership | agency |
|---|---|---|
| active, hand in a natural position | 2.12 | 2.52 |
| active, model hand rotated 180° | −0.62 | 2.2 |
| passive, hand in a natural position | 1.57 | −0.61 |
| passive, model hand rotated 180° | −0.91 | −1.5 |
Passive movement gave ownership without agency, as involuntary movement does. The rotated hand gave agency without ownership, which involuntary movement cannot. That supports “distinct and come apart” from outside the cases Gallagher reports.
What it does not do:
- It does not test the comparator. Nothing measures a forward model, efference copy or sensory feedback, so the account of why the two come apart is untouched. Thought insertion and the patient studies are untouched too.
- It shows the two senses interact. Agency was higher with the hand in a natural position, even in passive trials where it was not affirmed. Ownership and agency correlated only when the moved hand was owned (r = 0.503, n = 32), and not elsewhere (r = 0.19 to 0.22). “Distinct” holds; “independent” would not.
- It rests on questionnaires. Drift tracked ownership; nothing objective measured agency. THEORY-766 holds that rubber hand reports have not been separated from expectation, and the predicted pattern here is guessable.
- “Agency” here is the felt control of a model finger, a narrower sense than the minimal self’s sense of being the source of a thought. Blanke & Metzinger (THEORY-768) make agency no part of the minimal self, which these data neither confirm nor refute.
Connections
- The sense of agency. THEORY-322 holds that the sense of agency over an outcome draws on prospective signals from action selection, not only on retrospective comparison of outcome with prediction, and reports its prospective part absent in schizophrenia. That qualifies the comparator account here rather than contradicting it: both put agency in processes that run before the outcome. THEORY-300 reports the sense of agency reduced under coercion.
- Narrative selves. Dennett’s single centre of narrative gravity (THEORY-691) is the model the review argues against. Strawson (THEORY-684) is the source of the reflective minimal self here, and later counts revision against narrative views where Gallagher builds it in.
- Self-models and contexts. Metzinger’s transparent self-model (THEORY-064) and relational frame theory’s self as context (THEORY-044), which is set against the minimal self there, are the record’s other accounts of the self at a moment.
- Experience. Tani’s robot is a machine self-model with no claim about experience, which is the line THEORY-023 draws.
